Essentials of Instructional Design and Technology

Essentials of ID/IT is the first of six courses in both the Instructional Design Certificate program and the Instructional Technology Certificate program. Its purpose is to provide a general overview of the basic concepts and principles that every instructional designer and technologist needs to know in order to create educationally sound instruction.

This course is the first in a series of six courses for either the Instructional Design or Instructional Technology certificate. This course will provide foundational information regarding both instructional design and instructional technology. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in the fields of instructional design and instructional technology are expected to grow 7% and the median salary for these professions are $62,270.

Compliance Requirements in Instructional Design and Technology

Instructional Design and Instructional Technology practitioners need to be aware of federal and state requirements related to the field. This course will provide an overview of copyright and fair use; intellectual property; universal design; privacy and student records; and, electronic records. Participants will have an opportunity to focus on an individual topic and develop a policy for an area of interest.

Practitioners in both Instructional Design and Instructional Technology are responsible for content creation and organization. This course will provide foundational knowledge on copyright and fair use, intellectual property, and student/personal records.

Evaluation and Assessment

Evaluation and Assessment is the second of six courses in the Instructional Design Certificate program. Evaluation and assessment best practices are explored in the context of a scenario where students are required to create an evaluation and assessment plan for a training or course currently in development. From choosing the most appropriate assessment type for a given objective to writing great test questions to promoting academic honesty, this course covers the basics that will promote more authentic and valid assessment strategies.

This course is the second of six courses that make up the Instructional Design Certificate program. This course provides foundational information on both assessment and evaluation and its use in instructional design.

Learning Theories

Instructional design is grounded in learning theories: behavioral, cognitive, and social. This course will discuss key concepts and principles related to learning theories. Participants will describe and demonstrate application of a particular theory in relation to the creation of instructional strategies.

Instructional designers design curriculum and training for a variety of different audiences. The Learning Theories course provides foundational knowledge for Instructional Designers on how to customize training and curriculum design to best fit the needs of their audience by using learning theories to create instructional strategies.

Design and Development

Design and Development is a core component of the instructional design courses, which are part of the Instructional Design/Instructional Technology program. The purpose of this course is to study the systematic design of instruction. Participants will learn how to plan, develop, evaluate, and manage the instructional process effectively. Students will demonstrate their ability to systematically identify a learning/performance problem, conceptualize a solution, and design an instructional program.

Design and Development provides foundational knowledge to instructional design learners on identifying a problem, developing a solution, and then designing and instructional program to address the problem and solution.

Authoring Tools

Authoring Tools is a core component of the instructional technology courses which are a component of the ID/IT Certificate program. Its purpose is to provide an introduction to the fundamental skills and knowledge of commonly used authoring tools in the instructional design and technology profession. Selected topics include types of authoring tools, the evaluation of a tool’s potential use, as well as identifying how the tools may integrate into commonly used learning management systems.

The Authoring Tools course provides foundational knowledge to entry level instructional technologists. This course provides information on different authoring tools, selecting an authoring tool, as well as information on how well an authoring tool will work with other systems.

Programming for Instruction

The Programming for Instruction course will provide a very high-level look how programming is used in the field of instructional design and technology. Course participants will examine real-world use cases for the various programming languages commonly encountered in instructional technology and compare and contrast ways in which they might be used to improve design.

This course is specific to the instructional technology certificate program. This course examines the programming languages used in instructional technology, how they are used, and how programming languages can be used to improve design.

Learning Systems and Environments

The Learning Systems and Environments course presents information on several types of course delivery platforms. The Learning Management System (LMS), used primarily in the academic environment, and the content and digital assessment management systems, more frequently used in the commercial environment are presented and compared. Related topics are the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) standards and compliance, and methods for data tracking and reporting of learner activities and progress. Learners will complete a practical application project focused on defining the criteria and process for selecting an LMS.

The purpose of this course is to educate students in the Instructional Technology certificate program on the various Learning Management Systems and content and digital assessment learning systems used in both academia and corporate environments. Additionally, students will learn how to track and report data using these systems as well as complete a practical application project on this topic.

Capstone for Instructional Design and Instructional Technology

Building on the content and projects of each of the courses in either the Instructional Design or Instructional Technology certificate programs, the capstone course will present a summative opportunity to demonstrate integrated knowledge of Instructional Design or Instructional Technology.

The capstone course is the culmination of the six course series in either the Instructional Design or Instructional Technology certificate.  The capstone will have students demonstrate their knowledge in the fields of Instructional Design or Instructional Design in this final course in the series.
