St. Petersburg College’s student newspaper, The Sandbox News, recently won five journalism awards from the Florida Society of News Editors (FSNE) competition. The student division contained entries from multiple state colleges.

The Sandbox tied with USF’s Oracle for the most amount of awards received. Five awards were won by SPC students, which included two first-place winners.

The online newspaper is written and produced by students, who include writers from the college’s Mass Communications classes.

On Aug. 10, Sandbox advisor Professor Cindy Kuropas will take the students to the awards ceremony in Naples to receive their awards.

“This exciting event will allow students to speak to the managing editors and writers of Florida’s best-known newspapers like the Tampa Bay Times, the Miami Herald, the Orlando Sentinel, and more,” Kuropas said.
