SPC celebrates National Voter Registration Day!

Get ready to VOTE on National Voter Registration Day!

The Center for Civic Learning and Community Engagement (CCLCE) is excited to celebrate National Voter Registration Day as part of SPC VOTES, SPC’s collegewide initiative to increase voter education and voter registration.

This week, the SPC community has the opportunity to either register to vote or update their address before the October 4 deadline for the upcoming November 2 election day.

To increase voter engagement, the CCLCE and the St. Petersburg League of Women Voters (LWV) brought voter registration and voter education resources to all SPC campuses. The LWV’s is a 100 year old organization whose mission is simple: Empowering voters. Defending Democracy.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

For our virtual friends, please click on the LWV’s website for a non-partisan voter guide, how to volunteer with voting efforts and to register to vote or update your address online: https://lwvspa.org/voting/

Why Vote?

Increasing the number of people who vote in each election means better representation and a better quality of life. If we work together as a community and increase voter turnout, then our state and national legislators will listen to our needs.

Education, healthcare, immigration, infrastructure, the economy, our veterans, etc. are all affected by our vote.

For more information about how to connect with Voter Education resources or to find support for voter registration, please reach out to the Center for Civic Learning & Community Engagement at CCLCE@spcollege.edu.

What Will Happen to the Trop?

Spanning 86 acres in the middle of St. Pete, the Tropicana Field Site is being considered for redevelopment.

The City of St. Petersburg and HKS Architects developed two conceptual master plans for the redevelopment of the site, one including a baseball stadium and one without. This is a once-in-a-generation chance to create new opportunities for growth, economic development, and an enhanced community.

Join the Center for Civic Learning and Community Engagement and an architect from the Tropicana redevelopment proposal to discuss the many implications this project has on principles of equity, affordable housing and access to the economy.

MLK Day of Service: SPC Shares!

At St. Petersburg College, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy on this national day of service by partnering with Hope Villages of America to distribute food boxes to those in need.

Food boxes will be distributed on Friday, January 15 from 9 – 11 a.m. at SPC’s Clearwater and Midtown Campuses.

Last year, the MLK Day of Service inspired hundreds of thousands all over the country to come together to serve their communities. Volunteers in Pinellas County and beyond refurbished schools and community centers, collected food and clothing, recruited mentors, completed home improvements for the elderly, and more. As part of this national effort, let’s continue SPC’s leadership with the SPC Shares food distribution project.

How to get involved:

  • Share the news of food availability with your neighbors, co-workers, students and families
  • Volunteer to help with food distribution on Friday, January 15 at 7:30 a.m. at either campus (Face masks are required and volunteers will be provided gloves.)

Please, always report your volunteer hours by using the Center for Civic Learning & Community Engagement’s “Engage for Change” survey measurement tool.

Please note that the college and all of our locations will be closed on Monday, January 18.
