2019 WOW Leadership Conference: Leading from the Middle

St. Petersburg College’s Women on the Way kicked off their annual leadership conference, Leading from the Middle, while simultaneously celebrating Women’s History Month.

With the DJ spinning their favorite tunes, more than 80 ladies gathered at the SPC Seminole Campus with one common goal in mind: #OwnIT.

SPC President Tonjua Williams opened the conference, encouraging the women to take ownership from their current position while pursuing their goals.

Keynote Speaker Christopher Hood kicked off the day by sharing how focus, time management and personal development will allow you to be a pace-setter and true leader, no matter where your position is within any organization.

Throughout the day, the attendees to engaged with various vendors including:

  • Know Be 4
  • Heels to Heal Counseling Program
  • United Way
  • Florida Health Pinellas County
  • The Links, Incorporated
  • GTE Financial
  • Community Health Centers of Pinellas, Inc.
  • Year UP
  • Paparazzi

Keeping with the theme of the day, workshop hosts Colleen Donald presented on “Uncovering the Leader in You!” and Bria Sullivan presented “#OwnIt: Leadership Success Principles”.

Donald lead the ladies in an exercise to discover their unique leadership style and how they could be effective in their current position.

Sullivan shared how making incremendtal changes can increase results in your life. She also gave advice on understanding the difference between expectations versus agreements in personal and professional relationships.

Ending the day with a luncheon, Development Officers Jody Craig and Theresa McFarland welcomed SPC Foundation donors Verizon and Transamerica for a special surprise. Seven students were awarded a total of $4,000 in scholarships. The recipients included:

  • Ngan “Angie” Pham received a $1,000 scholarship from Transamerica
  • Nikkita Johnson received a $500 scholarship from Verizon
  • Deborah Grant received a $500 scholarship from Verizon
  • Sharon Arvelo received a $500 scholarship from Verizon
  • Felicia Fontaine received a $500 scholarship from Verizon
  • Cynthia Watkins received a $500 scholarship from Verizon
  • Dionne Sanchez received a $500 scholarship from Verizon
