Mock interview essentials: Preparing for the unknown

Accepting what we do not know and learning from it is the best recipe for success. In today’s workforce, most fears stem from finding that “dream” profession and being prepared for the interview room. To gain the advantage we must identify several key items that can dispel your unique fears. Let us look at some strategies below during a mock interview session:

Mock Interview

Preparing for the “big day” is the easiest way to anticipate challenges in the interview room. Ever thought about approaching a friend, family member, co-worker, or mentor to help you prepare for an interview? Do not fret – they are your best resource! It might sound like a difficult ask, but you will be surprised at how effective this can be.

Upon finding the right individual(s) to help, consider the following things during your mock interview:

  • Spend time researching yourself. Review your past experiences and accomplishments that may fit the needs of the company.
  • Being aware of your talents, skills, and experiences enables you to communicate the contributions you can make to the company.
  • Bring several copies of your resume to the interview (Yes – even during a mock interview!).
  • Research the organization by reviewing its corporate profile and by reading relevant information through reliable websites and resources such as LinkedIn.
  • Find out the specifics of the job you are applying for and prepare some questions about the company – its culture, goals, and mission/vision statement.

Feedback is Key

Applying these essential processes during your mock interview will put your mind at ease and allow you to take charge when the actual interview arrives. It is also crucial to learn from your mock interview by receiving feedback, e.g. body language, enthusiasm of opportunity, answers to questions. Be sure to learn from all the good and bad! This small – yet unique – experience can leave a lasting mark on how you impress the future interview room.
