My New Life As An Italian International Student at St. Petersburg College!

Italian International Student

“You are too shy!” I’ve always been told since I was a little kid. “You need to change if you want to do something in your life”, this is what family and friends kept telling me over and over. I was a good student, but my score in oral tests has always been low because I was too shy and anxious. I was 17, I was tired, and I decided that I wanted to make a change, for myself. Leaving Italy and studying abroad has been the hardest, but the best decision I ever made. I was still in High School, and I decided to spend my junior year as an Italian International Student in a small town in New Hampshire, USA. I remember that year as the best year of my life. I left my family, friends, school and I started a completely new life. Learning English, living with a new family, making new friends, and being the “new girl” in a different school challenged me. It was hard sometimes, but I made it. My shyness suddenly disappeared, my confidence increased, and I became a completely different person.

My parents came to visit me during my winter break, and they were happy to see me changed for the better. Of course, they fell in love with the States as well, and my father started daydreaming about a new life.

I finished my junior year, got back to Italy and graduated a year later. My final oral exam went amazing! I had to talk in front of ten professors (this is how it works in Italy. It’s crazy, isn’t it?!), and I did great!

In all this, my father’s dream became true.  He stared working for a

Italian International Student

company here, in Florida! In August 2015, my family and I finally moved to Dunedin, Florida. This is where my journey with St. Petersburg College began. I enjoy going to class every day. All the professors I had made everything interesting, and I could feel their passion about what they taught. As an Italian International Student, I now work in the Center for International Programs, and I could not be happier. I love to promote studying abroad and letting students know about this great opportunity that completely changed my life.

I have to be honest; it has not been easy at all. My family and I had a lot of difficulties, we had to get to know the area, to make new friends, to find new jobs, but it has been worth it.

We love it here now. I go to St. Petersburg College, I am about to get my Associate in Arts Degree, and I will transfer to a new school soon for my Bachelor Degree in Interior Design. Since I moved here, my life has improved. I am now more independent and open minded, I can follow my dreams, I met amazing people, and St. Petersburg College has definitely contributed in this. I cannot wait to see what great things this life has in store for me.

Participating in the Jamaica Study Abroad Program, 1000 Smiles Project

Jamaica Study Abroad Program

It is hard to put into words such a life changing adventure. I have so many feelings when I think about my Jamaica Study Abroad Program experience. I think about my classmates that I became so close to, my leaders that I have been so inspired by, and the amazing people that we met. Each one has forever changed my life and has shaped the way I will look at my future profession and how I view people as a whole.

First, I would love to talk about my classmates. When we got accepted into this program, we really had no idea of the work ahead of us. Some people may look at the pictures and see an amazing 10 days. In actuality, there was almost a year of planning, preparation, and anticipation. We had constant meetings, fundraisers, and other activities together. Sometimes, the extra work was a bit overwhelming. However, I think that it only made this trip all the more worth it. We put in so much effort to get to where we were, it made us cherish every moment we had together! I made some of the most amazing memories and created a lasting bond with my sisters in dental hygiene!

Secondly, I have to give all of the credit to Mrs. Krueger and Dr. Krueger. Without their hard work and dedication to the Great Shape Foundation, this trip would not even be possible. Each day they would work from sun up to sun down. They would work the full day and then come back to make sure we were prepared for the next day. Many days they even came back to the resort and went straight to the staff clinic to see extra patients instead of relaxing. I saw how they were changing people by restoring their smile. They were both truly inspiring and give me motivation to make the most out of my career and give back when I can.

Lastly, I have to mention how amazing the people were as a whole during this Jamaica Study Abroad Program. They were kind, thoughtful, and appreciative. I have never worked on better patients. They would never complain and you could tell when they said thank you that they really meant it. Not only were the patients amazing though, it was almost everyone we came in contact with. They always had on a smile and wanted to talk and make you laugh. The Jamaican people are truly some of the most amazing people I have ever met!

Overall, this trip has forever shaped my personality. When you see people that are so happy and have absolutely nothing, you start to think about what is really most important. When we came back to the United States, I was humbled, grateful, and inspired! When I first though of the 1000 Smiles Project, I thought of the patients that we would be giving a smile to. I had no idea how I would be gaining a whole new smile as well! Thank you to Mrs. Krueger, Dr. Krueger, and all of SPC that has made this trip possible! These are the learning experiences that could never be taught in a classroom, yet are so important in the process of learning and growing as a person.

SPC Celebrated 2017 Mid-Autumn Festival at USF!

Mid Autumn Festival

Mid-Autumn FestivalSt. Petersburg College students experienced Chinese cultural performances (dance, song, music) and tasted moon cakes on Monday, October 2, 2017, at the University of South Florida Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival. The festival is commemorated by the Chinese on the 15th day of the eighth month on the lunar calendar, which happened to be on October 2 in 2017.

The event was located in the Marshall Student Center Ballroom at the University of South Florida Tampa Campus, it was open to everyone, and it was free. Co-sponsors of the event included the USF World, Confusious Institute, Chinese Students and Scholars Association, INTO USF, Global Citizens Project, Chinese Culture and Language Club, Department of World Languages, Honors College, Office of Multi-cultural Affairs, Chinese American Association of Tampa Bay, and Suncoast Association of Chinese Americans.

Mid-Autumn FestivalThe Mid-Autumn Festival is an inherited custom of moon sacrificial ceremonies. The ancient Chinese observed that the movement of the moon had a close relationship with changes of the seasons and agricultural production. Hence, to express their thanks to the moon and celebrate the harvest, they offered a sacrifice to the moon on autumn days. Romantically speaking, the festival is to commemorate Chang E, who in order to protect her beloved husband’s elixir, ate it herself and flew to the moon.

On the festival day, family members gather to offer sacrifice to the moon, appreciate the bright full moon, eat moon cakes, and express strong yearnings toward family members and friends who live afar. In addition, there are some other customs like playing lanterns, and dragon and lion dances in some regions. The unique customs of ethnic minorities are interesting as well, such as “chasing the moon” of Mongolians, and “steal vegetables or fruits” of the Dong people.

Mid-Autumn FestivalThe Moon Cake is the special food of Mid-Autumn Festival. On that day, people sacrifice moon cakes to the moon as an offering and eat them for celebration. Moon cakes come in various flavors according to the region. The moon cakes are round, symbolizing the reunion of a family, so it is easy to understand how the eating of moon cakes under the round moon can evoke longing for distant relatives and friends. Nowadays, people present moon cakes to relatives and friends to demonstrate that they wish them a long and happy life.

Went to London Thanks To a $2,000 Study Abroad Scholarship!

Study Abroad Scholarship

“Hello, my name is Tashi Wangmo, and I am an international student who previously attended St. Petersburg College. During the summer of 2017, I had the amazing opportunity to not only study abroad in London, but did that on a $2,000 Study Abroad Scholarship that was awarded to me by the college. The scholarship made it easier for me, and my family to afford the rest of the cost for the trip.  Since SPC like most colleges does an express semester during the summers, myself, along with other students spent less than a month in London, getting hand on experiences for our course. Moreover, the itinerary for the trip was well implemented and everything flowed smoothly from the beginning to the end.

The best part of studying abroad is experiencing a foreign culture: As many students on our trip were travelling abroad for the first time, the study abroad was perfect because travelling with friends and trusted teachers are a guaranteed way to have fun, learn, and still be safe and sound whilst in a foreign country. Moving on, while in London, as our course was related to theatre, we did a lot of tours of some of the major theatres in the city like the Royal National Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe, The Duchess Theatre, and also watched several plays on the West End including Rome and Juliet at the Globe. Studying Abroad gives you a hand on, professional experience that many students in America may miss out whilst attending university. That is why, for anyone out there who has ever thought of studying abroad, especially for those who want to try it without having to spend an entire semester, I definitely encourage you to explore that opportunity and to contact your study abroad department to make this tiny dream of yours come true. Receiving a Study Abroad Scholarship definitely helped me, so I really encourage people to apply for it!”
