St. Petersburg College hosted a tour of Port Tampa Bay on Feb. 16, 2017. Participants included Pinellas County Economic Development, students from the LINCS Supply Chain Management program, industry partners from C.H. Robinson, and SPC faculty and staff. The Tampa Port Authority provided a complimentary tour aboard the Bay Spirit II, and shared information about port operations and the companies housed in Port Tampa Bay.
Port Tampa Bay:
- Is Florida’s largest and diversified seaport
- Handles over 37 million tons of cargo per year
- Is the nation’s closest deep-water gateway to the Panama Canal
- Generates almost 100,000 jobs
- Provides over $15 billion in economic impact
According to Enterprise Florida, “each year more than $160 billion worth of goods flow through Florida’s ports and airports.” In fact, Florida contains the 3rd largest cluster of Logistics and Distribution establishments in the U.S.
Marta Przyborowski, Chair with the College of Business, provided information about Supply Chain Management educational programs and newly created industry certifications aligned with the curriculum.
The SCPro™ Fundamentals industry certifications include:
- Supply Chain Management Principles
- Customer Service Operations
- Transportation Operations
- Warehousing Operations
- Supply Management & Procurement
- Demand Planning
- Inventory Management
- Manufacturing & Service Operations
Students may enroll in short-term training, offered onsite and fully online, to earn the industry certifications. SPC is working on an articulation agreement by which students will be able to earn college credit for earned industry certifications. College credits will be applied toward the Supply Chain Management track or certificate within the Associate in Science Degree in Business Administration.
