For Hospitality student, internship turns into full-time job

Ashlyn Heijl completed a front desk internship at Mariner Beach Club in St. Pete Beach as part of her degree requirements to graduate with her associate of science in Hospitality and Tourism Management. They were so impressed with her customer service skills and ability to learn front desk operations that they offered her a full time position.

Recruiters from Bloomin’ Brands, Bright House Networks, Jabil, PwC, Temp Wise, and Wells Fargo shared their expertise with students from the Business and Computer and Information Technology colleges in SPC’s Collaborative Laboratories on Tuesday, May 21.

Students learned employer preferences regarding resumes, interviewing, and making a good impression in the workplace. Other topics including self-branding, networking and job searching were also discussed in this panel and networking event.

After two employer panels where students asked questions, there was time for networking with students, faculty, staff and employers.

Why do an Internship?

Finding a job into today’s competitive job market can be a difficult task if you are lacking experience. Many companies will not hire you based on your degree alone. Therefore, completing an internship can give you a competitive edge in your search for the perfect job. Internships jump start your career by encouraging professional networking, providing inside knowledge of the industry and company, and testing the ground or fueling passion in your chosen field.

In today’s fast changing and competitive world – an internship is just the thing to give you the edge. More importantly, it can help you decide if you are in the business you want to be in!
