Thank You SPC Faculty Members

spc

In spring 2014, 37 faculty members were recognized on their home campuses for their work with student interns.  Internship courses are different from other classes taught by faculty.  Faculty members frequently go above and beyond when teaching an internship course.  Internships require time and flexibility to work with students who are in a workforce environment.  They also connect faculty members to industry through face to face and virtual site visits.

Faculty members review student learning objectives to ensure that the intern’s field work is a direct reflection of the courses taught in their program. Students are required to submit observations, journals and final projects to evidence their workforce experiences.

Sometimes students need a mentor outside the internship and faculty members become a sounding board for students as they navigate the workforce utilizing the skills and knowledge they acquired in the classroom.

Watching students put theory into motion is rewarding. It also creates a feedback loop for faculty members to observe and assess how their students retain and apply knowledge and skills outside a classroom setting.    There are numerous student success stories of projects, contributions and even employment as a result of a successful internship.

We in the internship office are grateful for the time, energy and oversight that faculty provide outside the classroom when they accept an internship course assignment.

Thank you SPC Faculty Members!

Student Internship Featuring Lynne Bouknecht

student

Lynne Bouknecht graduated from SPC’s Associate in Science in Sign Language Interpretation program and was kind enough to share her internship experience with us.

“Throughout my internship experience at SPC, I had the opportunity to interpret in a variety of settings that I never would have dreamed of stepping foot into given my “student status.” With encouragement both from my internship instructor and my mentor at my internship site, my interpreting skills blossomed in a way that I never thought possible. Through weekly evaluation forms, I was able to keep track of my mentor’s perception of my performance and see my growth in action. I am so thankful for the opportunities I was given during my internship experience, and even more thankful for my internship instructor and my mentor. With their guidance and feedback, I was able to tap into my “inner interpreter” and realize that I do belong in this field. As a result of my positive internship experience, I was offered a job from the agency I interned with. I am looking forward to everything the future holds, but will never forget about where I learned to fly.”Lynne Bouknecht; Received employment at LSS Interpreting Agency
