Internship Reflection by SPC Psychology Student Amanda Sheff

Social-Commerce-Psychology-300x271The Psychology program at St. Petersburg College offers an amazing out of classroom learning experience for their students.  Amanda Sheff is a current psychology major at SPC, and this is her reflection on her recent internship:

During my time as an intern at Pinellas Safe Harbor and the Homeless Emergency Project, I have undoubtedly learned far more about the thoughts, behaviors, and experiences of the homeless population than I ever could have imagined.  Having the chance to actually make a positive, lasting impact on the lives of people who have often been misunderstood by society and their peers is an indescribably rewarding feeling.  Working at these shelters and conducting milieu therapy practices has shown me that I was right in my career choice, that psychology is absolutely the right path for me and I am confident that I will be successful in this field as I continue on through my higher education.  I will never forget these people or the moments I’ve shared with them, as they’ve surely changed who I am and the way I think about society, humanity, and myself.

Week 2 of my Internship in Costa Rica

image3My second full week of work here in Costa Rica has come to an end and my third week is starting. The longer I am here the more I feel comfortable. I am really starting to settle in and make some friends. Saturday was one of the best days I have had here so far. I was picked up in the morning to head to Volcano Irazu! I have never been to a volcano before so this was an exciting experience.

Arts & Entertainment Speed-networking at SP/Gibbs

blogOver 60 students had a date with their future during the Arts & Entertainment Speed-networking event held at the SP/Gibbs Campus on October 9th.   Students began building their career network with representatives from WMNF, Gasparilla Music Festival, the Mahaffey Theater, the Palladium, local music schools and SPC’s Fine Arts Faculty.  The rotations were quick and invigorating as the participants’ explored questions about greatest accomplishments, inspiration, career goals and what advice they might give to someone entering into their field or program.

AND JUST WHEN WE THOUGHT IT COULDN’T GET ANY MORE EXCITING…..

blog1The event culminated with the announcement by Ty Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Gasparilla Music Festival of the winner of the 2014 Music Empowers Challenge, Savannah Crowther.  Savannah was unable to be present as she is traveling with a group of students to the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Convention in Los Angeles.  The entire room clapped and shouted in excitement as Rosaria Pipitone relayed the news to Savannah by speaker phone.

Disney Day at SP/Gibbs

disney

SPC student Jessica Herrera brought some Disney magic to the Student Service’s Lobby on the SP/Gibbs Campus on Wednesday, October 1.  In the last five years SPC has seen an increase of students applying to and being accepting to the Disney College Internship Program.  Students reside on Disney property and are paid to work in a variety of different cast positions from characters to ride attendants to hotel operations and lifeguarding.

During their time at Disney, students can take classes at Disney while continuing their courses on-line at SPC.  Disney mentors students and offers opportunity for professional growth.  This experience can be used as an internship in the Hospitality and Tourism Program and depending on where a student works – SPC credit internships in other program areas may qualify.

The presentation finished up with a group sing along to “Let it Go” from the Disney 2013 animated feature, Frozen.  The whole experience just kind of made you want to go build a snowman, it was that magical!
