Everything You Should Know About Focus 2

Focus 2 is not just a homework assignment you turn into your Smart Start class. Focus 2 is so much more than that!  What is Focus 2 you ask? Focus 2 is a website designed to match students with the right career choice. It is an assessment that will ask you a series of questions pertaining to yourself. The questions are based into five categories: work, values, personality, skills, and leisure. Take your time when you answer the questions- so you get an accurate overview and result.

Once completed, Focus 2 will put together a list of careers that seem like a perfect match for you! All you have to do is combine your assessment results from the five categories. Once combined, you can see which of the categories come up with a career occupation. When you look at your list of occupations, you can see what majors at St. Petersburg College support that career and a salary, keep in mind, this salary is not entry level! There are icons that will tell you if the occupation has a bright outlook or is eco-friendly. You can also save an occupation and link to St. Petersburg College’s website to learn more about a certain program.

Each occupation is hyperlinked, allowing you to click on the occupation to learn more about that specific career. You will get an overview of the occupation that discusses what responsibilities, knowledge, and special tasks you would do in that occupation. You can also see how well of a match you are to the occupation in a graph that displays side by side, the interests of someone that works in that certain occupation and how you answered those five assessments. Skills, values, work conditions, and education requirements are also listed for each career. Take the time to explore Focus 2 and learn more about career opportunities.

Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance

Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center is a comprehensive career research database, providing detailed and up-to-date profiles of more than 2,900 of today’s most popular jobs in 93 industries. This database now contains more than 1,000 new and updated in-depth job and industry descriptions.

To access this data base, go to www.spcollege.edu, click on student login. Once logged in click on my courses, then on the main page under additional resources click on library resources & services. Click on the databases A-Z link, then click the letter F, and then click on the Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center (InfoBase Publishing) link to open the site. This site provides 103 different languages. To change the language, go to the top-right hand corner above the SPC logo, then click the blue arrow next to select language, and choose the language you would like to use.

There are two ways you can find a career on the site. You can do a search on an area of interest or even the name of a job you are interested in, or you can browse a list of all industries and careers. The site also lists popular industries and careers you can use to look up a job. Clicking on the “Browse all Industries and Careers” link will take you to the industry overview and profession profiles page, and you can see an overview of the different areas found in each industry. Clicking on one of these areas takes you to a page that gives you an overview of that industry showing different job areas for that industry. On the right hand side of the page there is also a list of related careers listed under that industry. Clicking on the career will show you the profile page for that career.

On the job profile page there is also an overview of the career you selected. You can learn many helpful things about this career, including education and training, experience, skills, personality, salaries, a description of the position, and much more.  On the right side of the page there is a sidebar with quick facts about this career with great information such as alternate titles, duties, and salary range.

Use career development tools to get ready for Spring 2017 at SPC

Career development tools at St. Petersburg College can help students get ready to enroll in Spring 2017 classes.

Career development tools: Focus 2

spc-career-development-tools-focus-2Focus 2 is one of many career development tools that SPC offers to students.  It’s purpose is to help students find an occupation right for them and pick a major that will help them achieve their academic and career goals.

If you are still undecided as to what type of degree you are seeking and haven’t completed your Focus 2 career assessments, take the time to finish them. That way you’ll be ready to enroll in your classes before your favorite class schedule fills up for the Spring 2017 term.  Spring classes start at SPC on Jan. 9.

Using Focus 2

The career development tool works on all devices; iPhones, droids, tablets, etc.  Go to Student Login on the SPC home page and sign in with your SPC email account and password.  Click on MySPC and then on the My Career tab on the toolbar. Click on Focus 2 and then on “Go to Focus 2.”

This will bring you to the starting point and welcome page for your career planning readiness and academic strengths.  Respond to the questions based upon whether you would enjoy doing the tasks, not whether you actually are doing the task right now.  Once you have completed these two sections, then you will continue to answer the questions in the 5 self assessments comprised of work interest, personality, leisure, values and skills.   The self assessment results help you to match your occupations and majors at SPC to your personal attributes.  You can combine your assessment results to create a list of best fit occupations.  Additionally, you can view the supporting majors at SPC relating to your selected occupations.  All suggested SPC majors and programs listed in Focus 2 have a direct link to SPC’s website.  Take the time to explore all the possibilities available to you in Focus 2.

Enroll now for Spring 2017 at SPC

Remember, SPC will be closed for the holidays from Dec. 19 – Jan. 1.  Get ahead of the rush, beat the crowds and register for classes before the holidays!

Spring classes are available for viewing on Oct. 10. With your MLP completed you will be ready to place classes in your shopping cart and ready to register for your Spring 2017 classes on Oct. 26.
