Head Start student testimonials

Sociology provides an opportunity for students to understand the world around us to enhance our life experiences. These three Sociology students at SPC have discovered their own life experience through their internship with Lutheran Services Florida (LSF) Head Start program. Here are their testimonials about their internship experience.

Moriah Bailey

My experience Moriah Baileywith the LSF Head Start was simply amazing. I not only made an unbreakable bond with the teachers and staff of the center, but most of all, I made a stronger one with the children. Each day I walk into the doors of the center I am always greeted with a smile. The environment is full of motivation, kindness, and love to make sure each and every child gets the best opportunities presented. This internship has merged me closer to the interest I’ve always had, and always will for children.

My favorite part of this internship was having a second family that I looked forward to coming in to. I have learned so much. A few includes: arts and crafts tricks, and teaching skills. I have also helped organize paper work, invite parents to parent conferences with the teachers, and I have even helped in conducting our center’s first fall fashion show for the kids. Fun! I invested time and love into making the event one the children will always remember, and I will look back on that decision as one I will always be happy about.

This experience will always be with me where ever I go in the future and whichever career path I choose to follow. I am very thankful that I received the opportunity to participate in this internship.

As I look back over the past semester I think about the very first day at Head Start. It was so exciting, I remember the first child that was amazed with my hair being in a twist style and running up to me, smiling, to touch my hair. She said what’s your name? I told her, she said Ms. Teresa your hair is so pretty. I said thank you MiToni but it’s not so nice to walk up to a stranger and feel their hair without asking. She said I know but you’re not a stranger. That made me feel so warm and fuzzy on the inside. Children have great perception of people many times more than adults. That moment cause me to set forth a greater effort to do what I could for the children. It was gratitude like that that allowed me to be creative and initiate a fall fashion show for the kids, allowing them to dress in their fall fashion that they desire and have a blast of fun.

Going into the internship, I had no idea what to expect. I was under the impression that it was not going to be what I thought it was and boy was I right. I absolutely loved that internship. I enjoyed making acquaintances with my fellow coworkers and getting to know the children. I am sure that next semester, I will be volunteering at Reconciler once again. Thank you for such a wonderful experience. Best wishes for the future and remember, you can do it.

Etiquette Lunch at the Downtown Campus was a success!

EtiquetteThe Downtown Campus held an Etiquette Lunch on March 31st. The lunch was hosted by Career Services with discussion lead by professional Etiquette and Life Coach, Yvonne Ulmer.

Thirty-five students attended the 3-course lunch dining on a garden salad, chicken marsala, and cheesecake while being given information on meeting, greeting, and dining with a professional. Yvonne Ulmer did a fantastic job of bringing the crowd in with her extensive etiquette knowledge mixed with a bit of southern charm. Students were given information ranging from proper handshakes and greetings to signaling dining wait staff that they’re finished eating.

Following the event, several students stayed after to continue asking questions and practice the techniques that they had just received. Overall, students were very happy to have attended the event, all citing that they had learned new things. To see more pictures from the event please check out our Facebook page.

If you missed this event, Midtown will be hosting an Etiquette Lunch on Thursday April 23rd from 12pm – 1:30pm. Spaces are limited. To sign up, please visit the Midtown Student Life and Leadership office (MT105B) before April 17th.
