The HSN Tour or The Art of Relationship Building

Home Shopping Network logo

In the quest to find out just how much fun HSN is, 23 Fine Arts students participated in a tour of HSN on Tuesday, October 27.  HSN offers some amazing internships and they were looking to attract a few good candidates for their production opportunities.

This was more than a tour however; this tour was part of a process of building a talent pipeline. It was the fourth stage in the process of developing a relationship between SPC and HSN. It is anticipated that the fruits of this relationship will provide a talent pipeline between SPC and the number one employer in the Tampa Bay area – HSN.

Eighteen months ago HSN talent and acquisition staff visited the SP/Gibbs Campus and were given a presentation by faculty from MIRA, Digital Arts, Photography and Theater. HSN staff were impressed by the curriculum and cultivation of student talent. Next, the faculty were invited to visit the HSN campus to tour and talk with professionals in the industry. This gave SPC faculty the unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the breadth of experience an SPC intern can receive through the HSN internship program. One of the greatest reveals was that student interns had access to top executives during breakfast meetings.

The third component of building the relationship was to bring the Talent and Acquisition back on campus to present to students in the classroom.  Ami Chitarra has presented to MIRA and Theater.

And last – the tour. And so this is how 23 Fine Arts students found out just how fun it is to work at HSN. If you are interested in an HSN internship – please contact your campus Career Center for more information. Meanwhile, the pipeline continues to strengthen!

The World of Video Game Designers

Video game designer at work

Video games are one of the biggest money makers in the global consumer electronics/gaming market. It is a multi-million dollar industry which produces video games for consumers to purchase all over the world. It is a unique technology that people can use to stimulate the mind with different strategies, puzzles, education and entertainment offerings. Anyone who is interested and passionate about this growing market, now is a great time to explore your opportunities as a Video Game Designer in this field.

Video Game Designers are people who plan, design, and create video games. They will often work as a team to create a game for electronic gaming consoles.   Among these teams, some place their focus on certain aspects of the design process.  For example, one group will work on settings and backgrounds while another group may be working on the characters and animation.  Within this job you may be working on several different projects at one time. Working on a game can usually take long hours and up to a couple of years depending on how in depth the design of the game is. This means that the job may require long hours and have strict deadlines.  Do not let that discourage you from this exciting field, it is a great-paying career, making a little over 58K/year or $28.13/hr according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics; and a great opportunity to become part of creating an awesome game.

Video Game Design is a competitive field which requires some type of entry level skills to begin. Most jobs in that field require the recipient to have a bachelor’s degree in either Game Art & Design, Multimedia Design and Development (BFA), Graphic Design, or Animation. Large multi-million dollar game production industries are harder to get into right after earning your degree. However, smaller video game companies are often looking for video game designers and it’s a great place for a new graduate to start.

Looking for a part-time job WITH benefits? Come work for TSA!

Photo of TSA officers

If you’ve ever flown on a plane, you’ve seen them!  if it’s been in the last 14 years they’ve likely asked you to remove your shoes, belts, or separate your liquids into a plastic bag. The Transportation Security Administration, colloquially known as TSA, is a major part of travel in the United States and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has turned to St. Petersburg College in hopes to find students eager to become the newest Security Officers at Tampa International Airport (TPA).

They will be on SPC’s Allstate Campus, located at 3200 34th St. S., St. Petersburg, FL. 33711, on Wednesday, November 4th presenting on the requirements and benefits of working with TSA and interviewing to fill positions at TPA as soon as possible.  Doors open at 3:30pm in the Florida Room and the presentation will begin promptly at 4pm.

Part-time positions begin at $14.95 per hour and include medical benefits! There is no previous experience required, and training for the position will be paid. TSA lists its’ minimum requirement for this role as U.S. Citizenship (or U.S. National), a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, English proficiency, and passing of background, credit, and drug screening.

Anyone who has recently searched for a part time position knows that finding one offering medical benefits is extremely rare. Not only can this position provide you with benefits and a high rate of pay, but also experience. If you are interested in working for the government at any time in your career, in any role, it can be very difficult to enter into that network, having former federal government experience can make your resume really stand out against the rest. Even if you’re not interested working with the government again, having this experience shows future employers that you are reliable, trustworthy, and possess leadership skills. In a time when employers are receiving upwards of 200 applicants per job posting, having the benefit of speaking to the hiring manager can be invaluable.

To help you prepare to speak to the employer, ready your resume, and research the organization, contact the Career Service professional on your campus.

Do not miss out on this incredible opportunity. Questions? Contact Dee Mortellaro (Mortellaro.Dee@spcollege.edu / 727-614-7019) or Rebecca Sarver (Sarver.Rebecca@spcollege.edu / 727-341-4480).

Are you LinkedIn?

Linkedin art

The St. Petersburg College, Tarpon Springs campus, held a LinkedIn workshop for students on October 7th.  LinkedIn is a social media tool used for professional networking.

Students were shown how to create their own profile page and were provided with useful tips.  Students were advised to keep their profile content strictly related to their profession, as it is a completely different type of social media than Facebook. LinkedIn can offer a way to boost a professional’s network and the power of using it is in the actual networking.

For some tips on using Linked in, click here.

By joining the millions of people on LinkedIn, you can create a network of people who are like minded from the same industry you work in, and also create a network of people from a current job. If a job search or change was anticipated then it could assist in providing a path towards a new career.

When creating a profile, one of the most important items to begin with would be an appropriate photo.   A profile photo should be of a professional nature. A selfie should never be used, nor should a photo taken in a casual setting.  At the end of the workshop, students had the opportunity to have a professional photo taken by a St. Petersburg College Photography student intern.  These photos will be sent to the students via email to add to their newly created LinkedIn profile pages.

Join us for the next session, “Are You LinkedIn”, on Thursday November 19th from 11:00 am to noon, in the Career and Transfer Hub, NU 460, at the Tarpon Springs Campus.  All students are welcome, and if you have not visited this newly created room, please stop by and check out what the Career Services Team has to offer. If you have not yet created a resume, or need to improve your current one, we will be happy to help!

On Thursday, September 24th, 2015, over 365 Industry and Educational leaders from 38 Advisory Committees gathered at the Seminole campus for the 2015 Workforce Connections Advisory Committee Kick-off Event.

32 of these Advisory Committees held their fall meeting either prior to or after the event, which was broken up into two sessions – a breakfast and dinner.

Dr. Law welcomed our guests and shared that industry’s involvement is critical to ensuring SPC’s programs are effective in meeting the professional and employment needs of our area. Dr. Krupp spoke about preparing students for the workforce and “Ways to Plug In”.

Angie Beltz, Vice President of Cisco Solutions at Tech Data gave a testimonial stating that “I absolutely would recommend St. Petersburg College … The people that I have engaged with there are phenomenal. They’re so open to really doing what’s best for the student and creating an environment and an educational process that gives the student the tools they are going to need when they get out into the workplace. The more we can influence faculty in some of these concepts and types of curriculum, the more effectively we’ll be able to close the talent skills gap in the Tampa Bay area.”

Tech Data has hired 35 graduates in recent years. Giny Kapili, a student in the College of Computer and Information Technology shared her experience of being part of the original cohort of the Exploratory Lab with Tech Data. Dr. Connolly then shared the roadmap for the new Workforce Institute, highlighting a year in review.

Dr. Cooper closed the event by once again thanking Advisory Committee members for their commitment to the students of St. Petersburg College.

Advisory Committees assists with aligning education and industry by performing five major functions:

  • Assessing how the program meets the current occupational needs of the employers.
  • Reviewing and making recommendations on programs curriculum, including industry certifications, and recommended equipment purchases.
  • Providing input to help prepare students for work in their chosen field.
  • Expanding and enhancing St. Petersburg College’s reputation in the community by fostering positive community relationships.
