This theme-focused Spanish language program will allow students to fulfill their language requirements while learning the language specific to a critical area of need in the community, in addition to offering the traditional beginning, intermediate and conversational level courses that fulfill the language requirements of most programs. The three chosen areas of focus include: Spanish for medical purposes, Spanish for law enforcement, Spanish for business. The courses will be college credit, academic courses that will help the students gain their needed foreign language credit as they polish their vocabulary in their chosen area of study.
This study abroad program will take place in Costa Rica at ILISA, a Spanish School which specializes in professional Spanish immersion classes. Participating students will be taking language instruction in the morning (4 hours a day, 5 days a week) and they will be asked to engage in practicums whereby they will be visiting sites for practical exposure to the language, culture, and procedures. This means that they will be visiting hospitals or clinics, police stations, or local businesses (depending on the area of study). Cultural immersion activities and excursions are also a large part of the program.
