Career Preparation For Creative Minds

A great networking opportunity for creatives is coming up at the second annual Creative Career Summit on Sept. 26 at the Palladium Theater at St. Petersburg College.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. This event is open to the public as well as SPC students, staff, and faculty.

Creative Career Summit details

The evening begins with an overview of the economic impact of the arts in the St. Petersburg area by John Collins, Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance, followed by a panel discussion highlighting the personal journeys of Lea Umberger and Joel Malizia, co-founders of Et Cultura and Billy Norris, Music Director for Gavin DeGraw.

After the panel session, students, staff and community members will participate in a speed networking session where all guests will:

  • discuss career aspirations
  • promote current projects
  • make connections with artists and musicians within their community
Programs for all creatives

At SPC , students can choose to study a variety of creative artistic areas.

Those interested in music can choose from a traditional music curriculum that lays the foundation for a four-year degree or the Music Industry and Recording Arts  AS degree, a two-year, technology-based program. Visual Arts students can choose classes in ceramics, design, drawing, painting, print making, and sculpture. Those who prefer digital art can seek out the Digital Media AS degree, a two-year program where students can specialize in media production, graphic design, gaming foundations, digital video, or digital photography. Performance-based artists can take classes in music, dance, and theater.

Course by course, SPC’s talented faculty help develop students’ skills. But building a career in the arts requires more than just talent. Networking is crucial for any career search, especially in the artistic arena.

Artists have so many options – as independent contractors, in corporate roles, by becoming team members, and through continuing their education – it’s hard to know what the right path should be. In the article 7 Helpful Networking Tips for Artists from Artwork Archive, meeting other artists, helping others, and having an elevator speech are all important steps to making that determination and achieving career goals. SPC’s Career Services can assist as well.
