Some lucky St. Petersburg College computer networking students got to attend the annual Cisco Live conference at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando this summer.

Among those students were Melissa Zelaya and Lindsay Weber, named winners of the IT Management Scholarship for Women in Technology. This allowed them to attend the June conference at no cost to them or the college.

What is the Cisco Live conference?

Cisco Live is Cisco’s annual customer and partner conference where participants build the foundation for their digital future. Participants transform their outlook, career, and potential by learning directly from Cisco’s best and brightest.

Throughout the week, participants attended seminars, discussions, and keynotes with IT leaders from around the country. They also had the opportunity to speak on stage in front of more than 1,800 IT leaders to talk about “The Multiplier Effect,” a pledge Cisco has taken to create and multiply diversity in the technology industry.

Talking about the event, Melissa (right) said, “Thank you again for the opportunity. So much has already come out of it; sponsorship, another internship, and a possible job.”

Others from SPC attending the event were a group of 10 video production students from SPC’s Digital Media program. They filmed and edited footage from the event for Cisco.

The lucky student participants would like to thank SPC computer networking instructors Mike Gordon, Cedric Way and Stephen Marcinek for helping to coordinate and ensure the success of this trip.

  1. Thank you for the Cisco LIVE opportunities our Professors, and Cybersecurity Club President, Michael Milford, connected us with!

Later this year, a conversation I had with Cisco NetAcad online student, David Ward, will be featured on the Careers & Internships blog. David was chosen to work for the Cisco LIVE Dream Team this year, a national search for tech talent to work the event. After he earned several industry certifications in just a few months, he positioned himself to be the perfect candidate to attend and learn from Cisco LIVE, FREE. He returned from this on-the-job experience with an increased vigor for certification and is now working toward his Cisco Certified Network Professional certification! He will earn this credential FREE through SPC and the Carl D. Perkins IV Grant for Career and Technical Education.

It’s so cool to be a part of our students stories, to see their strengths, and let them be seen. Thank you for the great article, and congratulations to Lindsay and Melissa!
