The second annual Women2STEM workshop series held its kickoff event at the St. Petersburg College Clearwater Campus in July. Women2STEM encourages women to enter science, technology, engineering and math careers. Workshops start on July 15th, and are held every Saturday until August 5th.
There was a tremendous response to this year’s event and the kickoff hosted a capacity crowd of guests, educators, and industry experts. It was a great opportunity for many women to learn about STEM careers from women who work for organizations like Morphogenesis, Tech Data, Florida Wildlife, and MedXChange. They helped guests with a hands-on exercise, just like the ones that are used in the Women2STEM workshops.
Breaking into teams, each tasked with building the highest stable tower, as quickly as possible. It was a great way to teach the importance of teamwork, nonlinear thinking, and problem solving skills.
The workshops started July 15 through Aug. 5. These Saturday events feature lots of cool exercises such as a biology murder mystery.
After the exercise, a panel discussion provided information on getting started in STEM.
The panel was moderated by Student Success Manager Kay Morgan and Dr. Natavia Middleton, the Dean of Natural Science and Engineering. Panelists talked about the importance of people skills, mentors, and what they like about working in the field. After the panel, guests had the chance to speak with members of the panel and STEM educators. It was the perfect introduction to these in demand fields by women who have already built successful careers there.
