SPC Offers Three Social and Behavioral Sciences Internship Opportunities

Social and Behavioral Sciences Internship Opportunities

Are you interested in a career in social work, early childhood, exceptional education, sociology, psychology, or a related field? Our St. Petersburg College faculty have forged relationships with organizations in Pinellas County to offer some exclusive Social and Behavioral Sciences internship opportunities where SPC students can gain hands-on experience outside the classroom in real-world environments.

Head Start

Head Start is a federally-funded early childhood program for low-income families with children ages 2-5, including those with special needs. The program promotes school readiness by strengthening children’s cognitive, social and emotional development.  SPC students gain hands-on experience with children, interact with professionals in the field, gain an internship related reference and more.

The Learning Academy

St. Petersburg College has teamed up with the University of South Florida to provide a new internship opportunity.  The Learning Academy (TLA) is a 30-week program designed to provide a structured, employment-focused curriculum for high school graduates ages 18-25 diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  St. Petersburg College peer mentors help TLA students practice learned skills in natural settings and introduce students to social activities on the college campus and surrounding community.

Pinellas Safe Harbor

St. Petersburg College is working with the Public Defender’s Office of Pinellas County to offer students an internship in milieu therapy for residents at Pinellas Safe Harbor (PSH).  PSH is an emergency homeless shelter, run by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, designed to assist those who are currently homeless and need services to help them get back on their feet. Psychology interns contribute to the therapeutic milieu at PSH by developing supportive relationships with the residents and co-facilitating support groups. Psychology interns will practice pre-counseling skills, such as empathic listening, reflection statements and group facilitation.

If you are interested in or have questions about any of the above internship opportunities, please contact the SPC Clearwater Social & Behavioral Sciences Office at 727-791-5963.
