SPC Spain: My experience in Salamanca was amazing!

My experience in Salamanca was amazing. Our group goes to school near plaza de mayor every day. It makes going to school fun and being able to walk around and seeing nice views can be a stress relieve for students. Plaza de Mayor is beautiful during the day, but at night, it is stunning. All the lights will be turned on, and the buildings look like palace. This is a picture from the nighttime.

One of the most amazing things about this study abroad is that everyone was able to know more about each other and made some deep connections. We started to call each other our family instead of peers. We all go to the same school, we came from different places, different age groups and different races. Getting to know different perspectives through the others is part of study abroad experience.
Salamanca is different than study in college. Professors in Spain uses Spanish to teach lessons instead of English. While students are outside of school, their Spanish learning do not stop, it continues. Everyone in Salamanca speak Spanish, this strongly encourages everyone to practice their Spanish speaking skill.
When I came back to United States, I felt more confident to speak in Spanish, and I could even interpret more Spanish than I ever before!

If you are thinking about studying abroad with SPC, do not hesitate. It will change your life!

My study abroad experience was one to remember. Many memories and lifelong connections were created. Living in España with a host family gave me the ultimate cultural exposure necessary to understand and process the difference from the culture in Los Estados Unidos. My host family were very friendly, kindhearted, loving, considerate, and understanding people. They knew my goal was to learn Español more and I am very appreciative that they were a part of my journey to fluency. They made my stay in their home so comfortable and treated me as if I was born into their family. I can honestly say that I was blessed with the family selected for me as we were a perfect match. I was welcome to eat meals, watch television, listen to music, and dance with them. Mi mamá en España era muy divertida y ella cocinaba muy bien. Cada plato estaba muy delicioso! I really enjoyed everything she cooked. The meals were prepared with fresh ingredients and the biggest difference I noticed with the foods at my homestay and in different restaurants in España compared to the food in Los Estados Unidos was that the foods in España are not as processed. The foods are fresher and taste better to me.

I took Español 3 in Salamanca, España for SPC’s Spanish Study Abroad Immersion Program. Immersion is real and necessary to help you learn and become more familiar with the language. This program was introduced to me by my Español 2 professor, and I was a little hesitant because I did not want to leave my wife and daughter behind. Also, because I have never been outside of Los Estados Unidos. My wife was my number one supporter as she knows how important it is to me that I become fluent for my career goals. With that, I took her advice and applied for the program, and I was accepted. The plane ride was not bad at all and before I knew it, I was in Madrid, España. The school I attended in España, Estudio Sampere, had arranged for a bus to pick us up in Madrid and drive us over to Salamanca where we lived. I have never felt safer in any city. The directors of Estudio Sampere made the transition to my host family so welcoming because mi mama de España was there to pick me up where the bus dropped me off and take me home. School was intense as you must complete a semester’s work in three weeks but the professors at Estudio Sampere made learning interesting and fun. My professors were Andrea and Sergio, and I will never forget them as they have impacted my life positively by assisting me with learning Español in España. It gets no better than that!

Salamanca is a city where you can literally walk everywhere, and each day was more exciting than the last. I went on adventures throughout the city with my colleagues from SPC, as well as on my own. Salamanca is really The Golden City, and the people are so kind and helpful. The cathedrals, the university, the library, and museums were all breathtakingly beautiful. The weekend excursions were extremely exciting as I got to visit multiple cities in España. We visited Segovia, Avila, San Sebastián, and we even got to visit Biarritz, France. Visiting a real-life castle in Segovia that inspired Walt Disney was cool but walking along the shore of La Grande Plage beach in France was one of the best things I did on my study abroad trip. The people in France were kind as well.

Overall, I had ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE by studying abroad in España and I am forever grateful that I was one of the students selected to go. If you are thinking about studying abroad with SPC, do not hesitate. It will change your life. Please do this for yourself, you will not regret it. Thanks again SPC! – Timora, SPC Spain Study Abroad Program, June 2024

SPC Japan met all my expectations

I attended the study abroad program in Japan while taking International Relations. A trip to Japan has always been a bucket list destination for me. Although we had to endure the 13-hour plane ride, it was worth it. I could have gotten off to a better start in Japan as my phone decided to leave me behind in Tokyo during our connecting flight to Osaka. However, it led me to a smartphone-free international experience. Without the dependence on my phone, I had to rely on the information provided to global travelers by Japan. Leading to an entirely different experience than the rest of the group.

Despite Japan’s seclusion-based culture, they are accommodating to international visitors. I was okay with reading or navigating the areas we visited, as all the signs, pamphlets, and restaurants had English translations or versions. Their subway and train systems are straightforward to understand and navigate, even as a foreigner. On my next visit to Japan, I would be confident about getting around on my own with or without the assistance of a smartphone.

Even with my missing phone incident, Japan met all my expectations. The country is lovely and lush. Outside of shopping, I am not a city girl, so my favorite places we visited were out in nature. The three locations that really stood out to me were the Inari Taisha Shrine, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and the trip to Mt. Komagatake. The shrine was colorful and engaging. The shrine’s site was beautifully maintained, and right outside the shrine were food vendors and shops selling traditional snacks and souvenirs. Walking up the mountainside to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove nearly killed me. But it was worth it. The bamboo forest, the river, and the surrounding village were beautiful and relaxing. On the trip to Mt. Komagatake, we had to take a cable car up the mountain. We were fortunate to have great weather that day, allowing us to ride the cable car without any issues; however, it was too cloudy to view Mt. Fuji. Fortunately, our dinner reservation was not booked, and we got a great look at Mt. Fuji on our way to the onsen we were staying in for the night.

Coming back from Japan gave me an entirely different perspective on life and America as a whole. I recommend this trip to anyone, including those who have no interest in Japan. Their culture and everyday living are so drastically different from ours that it is worth exploring and experiencing. – Christina, SPC Japan Study Abroad Program, May 2024

St. Petersburg College Study Abroad gave me a such a wonderful experience!

I had the most extraordinary time in Japan. From the food, people, architecture, nature, and culture of Japan I feel as though I immersed myself in a way that I almost did not want to come home! Visiting Japan was the number one thing on my bucket list, and I am so happy I got the chance to do it through SPC.

St. Petersburg College gave me a such a wonderful experience and I loved every part of our toured trip. My favorite part had to be in Kyoto when we visited Fushimi Taisha Sembon Torii, home to a thousand torii gates. This Shinto shrine was not only visually beautiful, but I loved how sacred this place is to Japanese people. Many come to pray and ask for their wishes to be granted by the spirits, my friend and I bought a charm in which we could write in kanji our wishes and the kitsune of the mountain shall grant it.

Some big differences between United States and Japan are the fact that it is so clean in Japan. There is little to no trash anywhere and the bathrooms were super tidy even public ones. Everyone is also extremely kind and understanding which made the language barrier so much easier.

All I can say with certainty is that I will be back. SPC made this trip not a dream anymore but a checkmark off my bucket list. I am proud to say that I am part of the SPC Study Abroad Japan 2024 group. – Savannah, SPC Japan Study Abroad Program, May 2024

St. Petersburg College has truly mastered and made their trips worthwhile.

From the time the wheels touched down in Japan referred to by the Japanese as “The Land of The Rising Sun” or Source of Sun”, there was no easy description of the cultural differences experienced. Beginning with polite and respectful awareness shared by everyone to the carefully crafted delivery of food regardless of it being fast food or fine dining there was the feeling of a real sense of caring displayed.

The Japanese people have a sense of respect of their natural environment and a politeness for everything from architecture to food. One place where this was most evident was on trains. Whenever a conductor entered a car, he would enter and exit the car with a bow before attending to passengers. It would be unconscionable to the Japanese to be rude to a stranger or not to be properly dressed. Japan is an event or yet better described as an ultimate experience that is loaded with new discoveries and lessons in culture that has opened my eyes to awareness for self-improvement. It is a magical country that must be on every traveller’s bucket list. From busy cities to beautiful landscapes, Japan truly offers an enriching experience.
Some of the highlights included a visit to Mount Fuji, Hiroshima Peace memorial, historic landmarks, castles, samurai temples, Mt.Fuji and the Great Buddha of Kamakura standing more than 30 feet tall.

My last stop was Tokyo having the honor of being the world’s most populous metropolis. The home of the Imperial Palace encircled by a stone walled moat with numerous temples and shrines.
If you’re considering studying abroad, St. Petersburg College has truly mastered and made their trips worthwhile. There is always a skilled and knowledgeable professor to accompany you. Travel abroad will enhance your awareness of the world. It will give you a competitive edge in the job market, improve your language skills, and you will make lifelong connections. Getting out of your personal comfort zones will make you better! Go study abroad. This was my 4th trip, and I can’t wait for the next one!

A remarkable Journey

素晴らしい旅 (A remarkable Journey)

Embarking on an adventure through Japan is an experience like no other. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, our trip was a blend of ancient traditions and modern marvels, giving us a comprehensive taste of what makes Japan so unique. Here’s a detailed look at my enriching journey. After arriving in Osaka, our first stop was at the magnificent Himeji Castle. Known as the largest castle in Japan, it boasts 83 buildings and provides a fascinating glimpse into Japan’s feudal past. There were no photos allowed but imagine the number of stairs we had to climb and let me tell you the steps were very steep. Later, we finished the day with our first authentic Japanese dinner which is called “Okonomiyaki”, and it was a very unique dish. The next day we began with an excursion to Miyajima Park, famously called the “Sacred Island.” There we saw the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, renowned for its floating torii gate.

Following this, an expert local guide took us through Hiroshima, focusing on the city’s poignant history with visits to the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, a UNESCO Heritage Site which was truly eye-opening and a remarkable site to see. Later, we experienced the thrill of the bullet train at insane speeds to Kyoto. While we were in Kyoto, we visited the impressive Nijo Castle, built from Japanese cypress, and the stunning Inari Taisha Shrine, and observe at the Golden Pavilion, a Zen temple adorned with gold leaf. Furthermore, we saw the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and spent half a day at Nara, a landmark famous for its bowing deer. Finally, we spent our last days in Tokyo visiting the Asakusa Kannon Temple, the city’s oldest. Later, we spent our day vising Shibuya for its famous crosswalk, and shopping areas. Altogether, this trip provided a perfect blend of historical exploration, cultural immersion, and modern-day marvels and each day offered something unique.

SPC Japan: Met my expectations and provided invaluable insights!

Before embarking on our trip to Japan, my expectations were a mix of curiosity and excitement. I anticipated a rich cultural immersion, distinct historical landmarks, and a unique blend of traditional and modern experiences. Japan’s reputation as a technologically advanced yet culturally preserved nation intrigued me. Our journey started in Osaka and took us through several iconic destinations, each offering its own perspective on Japan’s identity and place within the international system. This reflection compares my expectations with my actual experiences and explores Japan’s position as an ‘abnormal’ state within the international community and its potential path toward ‘normalcy.’

In conclusion, our trip to Japan met my expectations and provided invaluable insights into the country’s culture, history, and place within the international system. Each destination offered a unique perspective, from the vibrant streets of Osaka to the reflective spaces of Hiroshima and the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity in Kyoto and Tokyo. Japan’s journey towards ‘normalcy’ is marked by its resilience, innovation, and dedication to peace and cultural preservation. This trip has deepened my appreciation for Japan and highlighted the importance of understanding and respecting cultural diversity in an increasingly interconnected world. – Taylor, SPC Japan Study Abroad Program, May 2024

SPC Japan: A Wonderful Opportunity

While in Japan, our group visited many different culturally significant places. A few of these were UNESCO World Heritage Sites. World Heritage Sites are landmarks and areas with legal protection administered by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) for having cultural, historical, or scientific significance. These protected sites included Himeji Castle, Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and Nijo-Jo Castle. We visited Himeji Castle on the second day, Peace Memorial Park and Museum on the third day, and Nijo-Jo Castle on the fourth day.

Himeji Castle is Japan’s most visited castle. It is known as “White Heron Castle” because of its soaring keep and brilliant white plaster walls. The main function of the castle was to serve as a center for administration and home for the Himeji’s daimyo (feudal lords). The main keep was built in 1601 and is one of the oldest surviving castle keeps in Japan. Due to the fact that the castle was never besieged, bombed, or burned, more of Himeji Castle’s buildings survived to present day than those of any other Japanese castle. Himeji Castle is considered a national treasure, so it has undergone regular restoration since the early 1900s in order to preserve it for future visitors.

Peace Memorial Park and Museum is located in the center of Hiroshima, Japan. The park is dedicated to the legacy of Hiroshima as it was the first city to experience a nuclear attack and also to the direct and indirect victims of the attack. Despite its harrowing past, this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. It is full of amazing natural landscapes and modern architecture. Over one million people visit Peace Memorial Park each year.

Nijo-Jo castle is another beautiful site in Japan. Niko-Jo castle has witnessed some of the most important events in Japanese history and the 400 years since it was built. The castle was completed in 1603 on the orders of the founder and Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The castle served as the Kyoto residence of the Shogun on the very rare occasions when he visited the imperial capital. When the Shogun was not in residence, Nijo Zaiban samurai guards who were dispatched from the Shogun at Edo (present day Tokyo), were Garrison at the castle. This 400 year old site is a unique survival from one of the golden ages of Japanese architecture and design that was known for its ornate architecture and magnificent interiors.

This trip to Japan was a wonderful opportunity and I am grateful to have been able to experience Japanese culture first hand. I was able to make long lasting memories and meet some amazing people. I would highly consider moving to Japan myself in the future. I truly loved my time in Japan and hope that I can return to the country again soon.

Studying abroad in Costa Rica was a life-changing experience

Hello, my name is Whitney and I am an SPC student who explored Costa Rica with a study abroad program. Studying abroad in Costa Rica was a transformative experience that left a lasting impact on both my personal and professional growth. The natural beauty of Costa Rica is truly breathtaking, from lush rainforests to amazing indigenous tribes and diverse wildlife. Throughout my time there, I felt deeply connected with nature as I conducted data collection for my studies. Immersing myself in such a biodiverse environment not only enriched my academic research but also allowed me to appreciate the importance of conservation and sustainability, which was important to me as a Sustainability Management Major.

I was truly impressed by the coral reef beauty and biodiversity I encountered while snorkeling along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts as I had never seen so many different kinds of fish, turtles, and corals. Additionally, the indigenous BriBri tribe shared valuable knowledge about their natural medicines and provided an unforgettable experience by guiding us in the art of making chocolate from scratch. Whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River was both breathtaking and exhilarating, while our stay at the eco-lodge nestled in the heart of the rainforest allowed us to truly immerse ourselves in nature. The experience of studying bats at the biological center and witnessing the release of the leatherback turtles were truly unforgettable and hold a special place in my memories. Overall, studying abroad in Costa Rica was a life-changing experience that not only broadened my horizons but also deepened my appreciation for the natural world and other cultures. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to connect with nature and gain a new perspective on environmental issues.

SPC Japan: It was truly unforgettable.

Hello, my name is Sophia and I recently traveled to Japan this past May with SPC. Japan was absolutely breathtaking, and it’s honestly hard to even attempt to describe the entire experience. The culture was so different, the scenery absolutely incredible and just everyone who went on the trip was so amazing. The temples and shrines that we visited (which we visited many) were so amazing, and were so architecturally beautiful. The mountains (yes, we even got to see Mount Fuji) were stunning. Mount Fuji did not even look real in person.

I highly recommend everyone and anyone to study abroad at least once. This was my first time out of the country and let alone traveling on my own. The experience really is life changing. I feel like I’ve seen so much more than I even knew existed. And there was so much I learned about myself, and that entire experience was just genuinely the best time of my life. I learned so much and had a blast. It was truly unforgettable.
