The day is recognized on Mandela’s birthday, July 18th, for next generation of leaders to address world’s social injustices. So be a part of this event because you can make a difference in the world, no matter how small the action is.

Tips from the China 2016 Study Abroad group!

Tips from the China 2016 Study Abroad group!

  1. mmexport1464211506642Must,must,must have comfortable walking shoes! Those strappy sandals just won’t cut it. If you don’t bring the walking shoes, bring plenty of band aids. You’ll need them!
  2. Wear clothes that breathe, as AC is hard to come by throughout the day
  3. Either bring enough clothes to last the trip or be prepared to wash clothes in your sink
  4. Make sure that you bring tissue packs, wet wipes and hand sanitizer.
  5. There’s no need to exchange a lot of currency in the U.S. Instead go to one of the plentiful Chinese ATMs (certain ones are partnered with American banks so reduced/no fee)
  6. Pay very close attention to your professors at all times!
  7. It is important to always have a partner. Walking alone is never a good option anywhere.
  8. Be punctual! This is important for success and happiness for the group.
  9. This is more for females: but the time change can mess with your body, so be prepared!
  10. Be prepared for an awesome adventure every day!

Spain – The Final Countdown

12182529_1157036317658245_5838647194737897107_oJust a few days until a group of SPC students and their lead faculty Roxana Levin and co-faculty Osiris Albrech will depart the U.S. to travel to beautiful Spain. The three-week long intensive language program allows beginners to learn the language, and the more proficient ones to improve their language skills while emerging into the Spanish culture. Apart from learning the language, students are looking forward to different cultural activities and exciting weekend excursions. Professor Levin is excited for her students and has one last minute advise:

“Traveling can be one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences of your life. I hope you are ready to adventure into this fantastic way to improve Spanish while immersing yourself in the Spanish culture in Salamanca.  You will soon be able to fall in love with the beauty and splendor of Salamanca.”

We wish all participants a safe trip. One last tip: keep an eye out for this old Spanish quote by Miguel Cervantes that can be found all over the city:

“Salamanca que enechiza la voluntad de volver a ella a todos los que la apacibilidad de su vivienda han gustado”

(“Salamanca makes anyone who enjoyed wish to return to its modest home.”)

Tips from the India 2016 Study Abroad group

  1. 13164469_10208020070917224_5933749899794861665_nDon’t take a hair dryer (you can request to borrow from the hotel)… also don’t take flat irons for your hair!
  2. Be sure your suitcase is around 35 pounds (not 50) in case you need to fly within India.
  3. Bring patience, openness, flexibility, strong legs and lungs, a desire to learn, and generous spirit.
  4. Spend quality time picking the mind of your tour director! Good learners ask many questions.
  5. Have the tour director from the country you are visiting teach you some of the local language with which to communicate with others.
  6. Ensure that all the money you want to exchange (rupees to dollars) has a date on the back in the center. If not, the money will not be exchanged upon your return to America.

Study Abroad Tips from the Australia 2016 students!

  1. Picture90Pack enough clothes but make sure to leave lots of room in your bags to bring stuff home.
  2. Save up more money than what you expect to spend.
  3. Do not expect things to go according to plans.
  4. Bring at least 1 or 2 towels.
  5. These countries are different, so it will be “shocking” on more than one level.
  6. Do your homework on the destination and learn about their culture.
  7. Try not to live through your camera lens – see the sights through your eyes and enjoy some relaxed picture free days.
  8. Most importantly have fun and learn along the way!

Israel – The Final Countdown

When SPC students visited Israel the last time in 2014, student Nicholas Taltos said:

“The dynamic [of this study abroad program] has had a synergistic effect–allowing us the combined benefits of scholarly expertise and experiential wisdom.”

Sharon Gragowski Jaffa Israel 2014In just 2 days another group of students, along with Professor Michael Jahosky, will depart the U.S. to travel to Israel. On their itinerary are many historic cities, one of them Jerusalem. Jerusalem is all about sacred space. Students will learn to dispel the illusion that “myths” are untrue stories that can be disproved by the empirical method in this class, which will help them better understand how the religious mind works. The word “real” is bigger than we think.

Professor Jahosky said that he is most excited about showing students the Haram al-Sharif (The Temple Mount), the Western Wall, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, as well as the hike through En Gedi and Masada.

Study Abroad Israel (11)“In the first few classes, I will be showing students how to think “Parabolically,” which combines what the ancient Greeks called “Logos” and “Mythos” as the best possible way to interact and understand with the sacred spaces of Jerusalem” said professor Jahosky, “students will also be learning about the history of Jerusalem and getting a thorough introduction to the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as learning about how other civilizations interacted with the Jews.”

“My last minute tips to students would be to remember to be respectful and open-minded when traveling to Israel, and to remember that this is a very passionately religious country.”

The professor would also like to remind students to ask him as many questions as they can possibly think of while abroad, because he has much to share with them about the history of Israel and these three religions.

SPC- Together for Ecuador

CaptureOn Saturday, April 16, 2016, Ecuador was struck by a 7.8 Richter Scale earthquake, destroying part of its coast. There were hundreds of deaths and thousands of people missing, and great structural damage to buildings and roads. Several countries united to help Ecuador with donations, including the United States. The Ecuadorian Embassy located in Miami gave power to certain organizations in Florida to collect donations such as water, canned food, clothes and some medicine. On Monday, April 18 the International Club at St. Petersburg College decided to be part of the change and started to gather donations.

Flyers were posted around campus along with two donation boxes located in International Office and the Quad. Staff, students, and teachers were more than eager to help out. On Thursday, April 21, the donations were ready to go to the Ecuadorian Club located in Tampa. The International Office was full to the brim with boxes of generously donated items. People were coming with many different types of packages ranging from canned foods to clothing. It took International Programs members two car-loads to bring everything to the donation center in Tampa.

“When we got to the Ecuadorian Club, I saw something that made me more proud of being Ecuadorian. I saw a huge group of people wearing the Ecuadorian shirt helping out, organizing the donations, putting everything together so it can be ready to ship it to the Ecuadorian Embassy so they can ship it to Ecuador. It was a wonderful experience, it made me feel that in some way I was helping out my country and my people. I couldn’t have done it without the help and support of all the teachers, staff and alumni at St. Petersburg College!” – Domenica Flores

International Student Story: Hej from Albania!

CROPPED-OLTA CELAJ 1111Hello my name is Olta Celaj. I’m very glad to share one of my greatest experiences here in U.S. I am from Albania, a small and wonderful European country. Albania offers so many great cultural experiences and traditions. I really would like to advice adding Albania to everyone’ s list of places to visit in Europe.

I  graduated with an architecture degree in Albania and worked as an architect for 12 years. Being a person who loves new challenges and education, made me decide to come to the U.S. and improve my knowledge in my major. It is very important to share and absorb different cultures. I really feel I have to experience and learn about cultures of different countries, it makes me feel like I am giving something to this world. Everyone has to do that.

The reason I chose to study at SPC was that I found it to be the most prestigious college. It is known to have a wonderful reputation, history and credit classes. Studying at SPC changed me a lot. Being in interaction with different cultures, makes me understand how special these cultures are. It really made me feel more flexible, more valuable and a more positive thinking person. It especially changed me in the aspect that I see how beautiful and colorful life is in various ways.

Five years from now, I see myself as an architect who is practicing and mixing European and American architectural concepts. For me. trying to match these different concept styles and cultures, means bringing the different countries so close to each other. This is very important, if we feel we are part of our world history. It is something special everyone can do for this wonderful world we are living.
