“I Have Applied to a Healthcare Program, Now What?”

Healthcare Program event

On June 10, the Health Education Center held the St. Petersburg College Foundation’s Innovation Grant initiative “I’ve Applied to a Healthcare Program, Now What?” This all-day event was held for students that have applied for fall admission to the Nursing, Physical Therapy Assistant, EMT and Respiratory Care programs. Students had an opportunity to visit the Health Education Center and learn how to better prepare themselves for the upcoming semester through multiple seminars and guest speakers.

Some of the workshops held were the Balancing Act, Stress Management 101, Finance 101, and What Happens Next. These seminars were designed to prepare students ahead of time for the academic, time, financial and mental rigors that are required during health programs. Back up plans were also discussed for those who may not be selected for the highly competitive selective admission programs. Speakers included the HEC Provost, program directors, faculty, students, Connections, Disability Resources, student support advisors, career specialists, financial assistance counseling, and the HEC admissions coordinator.

Healthcare program admissionsDuring lunch students were given the opportunity for a question and answer session with program directors and faculty. The day ended with a career expo where students could explore other programs of interest, speak with an advisor or career specialist, or a financial aid counselor. Program directors and faculty were also on hand to speak one on one or in small groups with students. There were also opportunities to win prizes, including a tablet.

Approximately 100 students attended the event and all applicants were emailed presentation materials. Students that applied to the healthcare programs were notified this week of their admission status.
