Be the Match Event

Every 3 minutes, one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every 10 minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer.  The “Be the Match” registry is the connection between patients searching for a cure and life saving stem cells.

On Monday, March 12, Marc Silver was in the HEC lobby with the SNA officers and members recruiting volunteers for “Be the Match”.  Over 100 HEC students participated by becoming members of the “Be the Match” registry.  In the morning, Marc presented in the EMS class and the paramedics class.  In the afternoon, he presented to each of the day Level I Nursing classes. He then went to BayCare and presented to the evening Level I Nursing class.

One of the students who signed up last year to be a donor, informed us that she had received a call and an email that she was a match! Additionally, one of our SPC students needs a match and has two possible matches.

Through hands-on stations, such as suturing, tools of the trade, and engineering, expose students to important health topics and examine the heart, trachea and lungs of a mammal through dissection. Investigate how the heart and lungs work together to oxygenate and circulate blood throughout the body. Learn why interpreting an EKG graph is important for good health.

Career Day

On February 1st Mrs. Castillo’s Level 2 Clinical group was invited to attend Career Day at the Cathedral of St. Jude Middle School in St. Petersburg. The level 2 nursing students spoke about the nursing program and about their futures in Nursing to approximately 50 middle school students during three sessions. The Nursing students demonstrated one of many skills they have learned in class. The middle school students were given the chance to actively participate and perform the skill and ask questions about the nursing profession. It was a fun filled day of sharing their excitement for the SPC nursing program and their future careers in Nursing.
