About the poet

James E. Tokley is the first official poet laureate for both the city of Tampa and Hillsborough County. His work has been showcased as part of the White House Millennium exhibit, etched above the Hillsborough County Courthouse, performed along with the Florida Symphony Orchestra and selected as the inaugural poems for mayors and governors. We are thrilled to have him join us at the Allstate Library in November when he will be reading from a selection of his work.

“We are very honored and excited to have James Tokley on our campus for our first poetry night,” says Dr. Scott Fronrath, provost at the Allstate Center. “His ability to bring to life poetic words in a profound way is a real experience that our students will enjoy.”

What fills us with excitement here, today
as we contemplate the will to be renewed
To pledge once more, what once we strove to say
To do, at last, what we set out to do
To see across what seems an endless sea
and say the words that few thus far could say
To stand here, in the face of History
And say to all the world,
“This is Our Day!”
From A Second Chance at Destiny by James E. Tokley
