Florida’s First Center for Military and Veteran Artists

Why is art for Military and Veterans important to the Tampa Bay area?

In order to preserve the freedoms of this country we need a strong National defense.  We do that with an all-volunteer force of people who are prepared to go into harm’s way to protect this way of life.   How we treat those volunteers when they are injured will have influence on whether others will feel confident about following in their path.  Seeking better ways to care for veterans demonstrates appreciation and the Veterans Arts Center of Tampa Bay is one of the ways Tampa Bay cares for and honors Veterans for their sacrifice and contributions.

VACTB is building an environment where Military and Veteran artists can display their work and where disabled Veterans can receive the benefits of art therapy.

Art as Therapy – Visual and Performing Art programs for veterans.

American’s veterans often return home with psychological and medical conditions that impair functioning, disrupt family relationships, and prevent entry into the workforce. Art therapy has been proven to be beneficial in assisting these veterans in recovering from these conditions.

Art as Therapy will offer free access to Art therapy for veterans utilizing a licensed art therapist and local non-profit art education centers. Visual art classes will include painting, drawing, photography, glass and clay. Performing arts will include poetry, writing, acting and digital media.

Tour De Force – National, regional and local artist exhibitions.

The Veterans Art Center of Tampa Bay will work to sponsor national traveling exhibits centered on themes related to national military history and veterans’ art projects. The purpose of this program is to expose and educate the Tampa Bay area to the military experience expressed through the various art mediums. VACTB wants to contribute to the significance of the body of work created by these veterans.

Esprit De Corps – Saturday Morning Art Programming for Veterans.

Saturday morning programming will allow veterans and their families to interact using the creative process to help strengthen the family unit. Activities with other military family members allow for added support and understanding in dealing with active duty and post deployment stresses.

Operation Art – Art gallery for the display and sale of Veteran Art.

Operation Art Gallery will showcase juried fine artwork created by our veteran members. Sale of the artwork will benefit the artists as well as provide support to VACTB. The gallery will be open to the public and serve as a destination point for fine artwork in Tampa Bay area.   This gallery gives veterans the opportunity to educate and inform the public of their talents and experiences.

The VACTB located at 6798 Crosswinds Dr N St Petersburg Florida 33701.

Your support would be of tremendous value in helping us build our “Force for Art.”  Please visit our site to learn more about what we do, to become a member, and/or to make a donation.

We have also partnered with Heavendropt, a Not for Profit that makes crafts and jewelry out of Army parachutes. Heavendropt also offers talk therapy with global reach through an internet radio station and an exchange with a similar art initiative in Frankfurt, Germany.

VA Announces Community Care Call Center to Help Veterans with Choice Program Billing Issues

WASHINGTON – Veterans can now work directly with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to resolve debt collection issues resulting from inappropriate or delayed Choice Program billing. In step with MyVA’s efforts to modernize VA’s customer-focused, Veteran-centered services capabilities, a Community Care Call Center has been set up for Veterans experiencing adverse credit reporting or debt collection resulting from inappropriately billed Choice Program claims.

“As a result of the Veterans Choice Program, community providers have seen thousands of Veterans. We continue to work to make the program more Veteran-friendly,” said Dr. David Shulkin, Under Secretary for Health. “There should be no bureaucratic burden that stands in the way of Veterans getting care.”

The new call center will work to resolve instances of improper Veteran billing and assist community care medical providers with delayed payments. VA staff are also trained and ready to work with the medical providers to expunge adverse credit reporting on Veterans resulting from delayed payments to providers.

Veterans and community care medical providers experiencing these problems can call 1-877-881-7618 for assistance.

VA is urging Veterans to continue working with their VA primary care team to obtain necessary health care services regardless of adverse credit reporting or debt collection activity.

VA acknowledges that delayed payments and inappropriately billed claims are unacceptable and have caused stress for Veterans and providers alike. The new call center is the first step in addressing these issues. VA presented The Plan to Consolidate Community Care in October of 2015 that outlines additional solutions to streamline processes and improve timely provider payment.

For more details about the Veterans Choice Program and VA’s progress, visit: www.va.gov/opa/choiceact . Veterans seeking to use the Veterans Choice Program can call1-866-606-8198 to find out more about the program, confirm their eligibility and schedule an appointment.

An Open Letter from Major Scott “Mack” Macksam, USA Ret. Regarding the Tampa Bay Veterans Art Center

Ladies and Gentleman

I am Scott Macksam “Mack” United States, Army Retired,  Founder for the First Arts Center in the State of Florida for our Military , Veterans and Families: the Veterans Art Center Tampa Bay 501c3.  For the past year and half I been developing the center concept that will have  various therapy, wellness and educational programs reaching as far away as Frankfurt, Germany.   I personally wanted to do something unique for Tampa Bay that helps to heal the casualties of the long conflict we have been involved and create a legacy for future generations.  The ripple effects of this current conflict will last for decades beyond our generation so the idea is to mobilize our efforts within our own communities .

I am currently securing a property in St Petersburg and once we have completed the final preparations, a grand opening event will be announced.

I know you all will ask ” Where” and that information will be coming soon.

Representing St. Petersburg College, Cdr Jeff Cavanagh has agreed to be a board member. Jeff is a good friend and comrade from the days when I directed the Officers Training Program at USFSP campus.  I can see St Petersburg College to be our premier college that supports the VACTB and those SPC Veterans in your arts program.

For all the SPC arts leadership, I request your interest, support and involvement as we move forward. Please stand-by for more information…………..
