One Veteran suicide is too many

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) released results of the largest and most comprehensive analysis of Veteran suicide ever conducted. More than 55 million Veterans’ records were reviewed from 1979 to 2014 from every state in the nation. This major undertaking has advanced the Department’s knowledge from the previous report conducted in 2012. Compared to the data from the 2012 report, which estimated the number of Veteran deaths by suicide to be 22 per day, the current analysis indicates that in 2014, an average of 20 Veterans a day died from suicide. Six of the 20 were users of VA services. This information is important as it shows that Veterans who actively engage in services provided by VA are less likely to commit suicide than those who are not. The full report is available here: www.mentalhealth.va.gov/docs/2016suicidedatareport.pdf

Regardless of the numbers or rates, one Veteran suicide is one too many. The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, along with VA facilities all across the country, continues to spread the word that suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility. We are very committed to our suicide prevention efforts. In addition to the large number of mental health professionals the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System employs, we have a suicide prevention team dedicated to providing ongoing staff training, facilitating prompt delivery of care and responsiveness, and monitoring Veterans identified at high risk of suicide. We also have effective treatments that mitigate this risk. Effective treatments include both evidence-based psychotherapies and biomedical treatments that help patients prone to self-harm as a result of a mental health diagnosis.

Another important resource for Veterans is the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255 press 1). Veterans and their loved ones can call 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1, chat online at VeteransCrisisLine.net, or send a text message to 838255 to receive at no cost, confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, even if they are not registered with VA or enrolled in VA health care. Since its launch in 2007, the Veterans Crisis Line has answered more than 2.3 million calls and made more than 60,000 lifesaving rescues across the country. In 2015 alone, more than 400 rescues occurred across the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System through our collaboration with local law enforcement agencies. When we are notified that a Veteran either directly or indirectly implies that he or she intends to commit suicide or inflict self-harm, we initiate a health and welfare check through local law enforcement and emergency medical services if appropriate. A health and welfare check is local police and other first responders visiting a Veteran’s home to ensure he or she is safe. First responders will intervene if necessary and also ensure the Veteran receives appropriate care.

Veteran suicide touches everyone – families, friends, those of us at VA, community first responders, and our communities. We urge our community partners, family members, friends and others to help Veterans connect to VA health care services. If you know a Veteran who needs our help, please help us help them by connecting them with us by letting them know that help is available 24/7. Whether through routine mental health appointments, visits to the emergency department, or telephone care through the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255 press 1), we do our very best to address any and all mental health needs, urgent and routine. Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to the health and well-being of America’s Veterans.

Sincerely, Suzanne M. Klinker Director, Bay Pines VA Healthcare System

Make the Connection

Want to mention to all Veterans in the Tampa Bay area of a special presentation this Thursday,  August 11, 2016 at 2:00 PM at St. Pete City Hall (Community Resource Room). Come hear about an exciting new initiative of the Department of Veteran Affairs. This initiative is called the “Make the Connection Campaign” that is working to reduce the stigma of veterans afflicted with mental health conditions.

Make the Connection looks to reduce mental health stigma, by sharing a collection of over 500 personal Veteran stories aimed at encouraging others to reach out for mental health help when they need it.  Veterans can listen to stories from someone who has walked in their shoes, learn about ways they found support, and locate resources to connect them to care.  Here is a compilation of some stories of recovery.

Claire Woodward, and a team from the Department of Veteran Affairs, will be there to share information about the initiative and to have a discussion about and how we can use it to support veterans in our community. I encourage everyone to attend-this promises to be a very informative meeting.

Military Order of the Purple Heart County Proclamation

The Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners will be presenting a Proclamation on behalf of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, on Tuesday, August 9th, at 0930. The ceremony will take place inside the Assembly Room, located at 315 Court Street, Clearwater, Florida, 33756. Robert Groover, Purple Heart Recipient, and President of the Pinellas Vets Association, will accept the Proclamation on behalf of all Purple Heart Recipients of Pinellas County. Please plan to attend, and help show the Board of County Commissioners what a great asset Veterans of Pinellas County continue to be.

Florida Veterans Memorial Plaza

An open invitation from our friend Father Bob Swick:

The Florida Veterans Memorial Plaza at Crest Lake Park, Clearwater is now a reality and the site for all future Memorial Day and Veterans Day Tributes. This Veterans Day Celebration, scheduled for November 12th, Saturday, will be the first since the opening of FVM Plaza. It will be a stellar occasion, as it should be, guaranteed in part, with your participation.

This is a call for you to help make this a truly memorial occasion. It’s a call out with a narrow response window; the 100 day countdown to Celebration begins on August first.

Tampa Bay Veterans Alliance will orchestrate the event and do much of the “heavy lifting”, just like it has these past twelve years. But it can’t be done alone; we need community support.

Many ideas are in the works but before anything crystallizes, we want to call one (1) meeting to formalize a program and action plan. This meeting will take place on 3 August, at 5:30 pm. The location will be at our Headquarters on Hercules Rd in the Clearwater Air Park, between Drew and Sunset Point Roads.

Please email response.

Telling: USF St. Petersburg Participant Application

Telling Project History:

Since 2008, The Telling Project has produced 42 original performances in 19 states in which veterans and military family members stage their stories of military life for their communities, bridging the civilian/military gap during a time of ongoing overseas conflict. Veterans and veterans’ family members step forward as performers, a coalition of community partners is assembled, and after interview, performance training, and rehearsal, the ‘performers’ tell their stories of service to their communities.

Telling Project Mission:

With less than one percent of the population serving in uniform over the last eleven years of war, contact between civilian and military populations in the US is at historic lows. Through performance, The Telling Project facilitates meaningful contact between veteran and civilian populations on a community level. For military and military families, greater insight into their experiences facilitates re-connection with civilian society. For civilians, the dismantling of stereotypes surrounding veterans dispels anxieties arising from sensational depictions of veterans in the media and allows communities to benefit from the skills and experience that veterans offer to a community. No less important, a human understanding of military service fosters a stronger connection to community, to nation and to the world at large. Theatrically, Telling performances pivot on the expectation that matters not acknowledged in the outside world can be engaged within the performance space. This allows performers to explore aspects of their experiences and selves that they are unwilling or unable to otherwise, and audiences to be receptive of this exploratory process and what it reveals.

Honor Guard Needed

You once stood PROUD in your uniform. Stand PROUD once again, in the uniform of the PINELLAS COUNTY VETERANS COUNCIL HONOR GUARD.

The PCVC Honor Guard’s major activity is to provide “Military Honors” for our deceased Brothers and Sisters. We are available to our veteran’s families at no charge, to honor fallen loved ones, at memorial, remembrance, and funeral services. While grim, these events offer solace and closure to the families, and are extremely dignified and respectful while honoring our fallen comrades. We render a brief homily; fold and present the Flag; fire a Three Volley Salute; and play Taps. This service is very rewarding to us, knowing that we have served a fellow veteran in his or her final moment, while providing closure for the family.

Our other major activity is “Presenting The Colors” for school graduations, civic clubs, the Tampa Bay Rays Baseball games, corporate events, and most anyone else that wants to start off their affair patriotically. We also march the Colors in local parades.

We are currently expanding our ranks, and are looking for Honorably Discharged vets, male or female, from any of our Military Services.

Time commitment is small. Most funerals require two hours, including driving and dressing time. “Presenting The Colors” usually lasts long enough for the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem, plus travel/dressing time. The Operations Officer emails the schedule, and the HG members return email saying which events they are available for. We have members that work full time, part time, or are “snow-birds”. Everyone fits the schedule into their life as they can. (If married, “honey-do’s” generally have priority.) We have a monthly meeting, normally lasting one hour. There are no dues, and the PCVC pays ALL* of the initial uniform cost, and all replacement costs. JOIN US !

For information, please call or email Commander Ed Lillich, @ 727-546-2246 / elillich@AOL.com, or Operations Officer Herb Karkheck @ 727-455-1134 / herbflight@tampabay.rr.com. *there is some fine print!

TAMPA BAY INTERN UNVEILS REDESIGNED WEBSITE

New TampaBayIntern.com Features Refreshed Design and Enhanced Capabilities

HILLSBOROUGH & PINELLAS COUNTIES (June 6, 2016) – CareerSource Tampa Bay and CareerSource Pinellas are excited to announce the launch of the freshly upgraded Tampa Bay Intern website. Forging the connection between intern and employer has never been easier.

In today’s work environment, just having an education is not enough; applicants need to have what seems like 12 years of experience just to apply for an entry level position. This is where internships are crucial, as they give the experience necessary for a full time job while working around everyday life. In Florida, there’s no better place to look than TampaBayIntern.com.

Tampa Bay Intern, a branch of CareerSource Tampa Bay and CareerSource Pinellas, connects both employers and students seeking internship opportunities. The initiative focuses on finding candidates an internship that matches their skill set while making sure the employer has the right candidate for their position. To insure that this goal is achieved a new set of upgrades were introduced:

  • Enhanced search capabilities allow the intern to narrow down their search by listing their Major, Fields of Interest, or Industry Specific Tags. They also have the option of excluding unpaid internships from the search.
  • The addition of Industry Specific Tags allow both the candidate and employer to focus their search by simply clicking on categories related to the field of interest.
  • Employers and candidates can now send private messages to one another through the website’s secure messaging portal; thereby eliminating the need to send mass e-mails in order to stay in touch.
  • The addition of Employer and Candidate Profiles provide a glimpse of the company or candidate, allowing them to weed out possible bad employees or positions.
  • Job postings now have the option of including Google Maps to better showcase the internship’s location, giving the candidate a better estimate of which is commutable and which is not.
  • Employers can now target key requirements for what’s needed for the position and see which applicant has the most similarities.

All of these enhancements will save time and assist both the employer and job seeker in making the right match. Employers interested in posting an opportunity or students looking for an internship, visit TampaBayIntern.com today to register.

Dental Day of Service June 25th

Veterans Will Receive Free Dental Care at Nearly 400 Aspen Dental Practices Help Support Aspen Dental’s National Day of Service on June 25th

Thousands of veterans will receive free dental care on Saturday, June 25th, when doctors and their teams from nearly 400 Aspen Dental-branded practices in 33 states open their doors for Aspen Dental’s National Day of Service – an event that is expected to be the largest single-day oral health initiative for veterans in 2016.

Like millions of other Americans, veterans can struggle to find oral health care when they need it. That’s why Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement, a community-giving initiative launched in 2014, is focusing its efforts on helping veterans get the dental care they need.

Here is how you can help:

Interested veterans should call 1-844-AspenHMM to find a participating practice in their community and schedule an appointment in advance – space is limited and appointments are filling up fast!

More About Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement

The Healthy Mouth Movement (HMM) is a community-giving initiative launched in 2014 to deliver free dental care to thousands of people in need in communities across the U.S. and oral health education to millions more. Since 2014, more than 7,000 patients have received free dental care through the HMM – an initiative that has spanned 33 states, resulting in more than $4.1 million dollars in free dental care, thanks to the generosity of dentists and team members from Aspen Dental practices across the U.S.

As you know, people who want a healthy mouth often struggle to find oral health care when they need it due to limited access to dentists, high costs, or lack of insurance. Those barriers kept more than 155 million American adults from visiting a dentist in the past year – just over half the adult population in the U.S. Among those are veterans, a patient population that resonated deeply with the volunteers from Aspen Dental practices because veterans do not receive dental care benefits through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs unless they are 100 percent disabled or have a service-related injury to their mouths.

Since 2015, Aspen Dental has partnered with Got Your 6, a collaborative campaign that works to empower veterans and strengthen communities nationwide. Got Your 6 – meaning “I got your back”– focuses on six key pillars of veteran reintegration, including leadership, health, and education. Aspen Dental dentists and team members share in this same belief, and have helped shine a spotlight on an important issue, thereby truly making a difference in the lives of many veterans. It is a commitment that has continued in 2016, as Aspen Dental focuses once again on empowering veterans with a healthy smile.

Aspen Dental branded dental practices are independently owned and operated by licensed dentists. For more information about the relationship between Aspen Dental Management, Inc. and the branded practices, please visit
