Professor William Cross was nominated by SHARE for Best Speaker Award. Dr. Cross teaches upper division courses for the College of Computer & Information Technology. He was nominated by the attendees of his session who prepared an evaluation of the session content. SHARE’s objective is to train and offer valuable opportunities to collaborate on discussions and navigate challenges.

Cross became involved with SHARE, Inc. in 1984 when he was the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Seminole Electric in Tampa, FL. At present, he is still involved with the organization.

Technology career event draws 250+

technology career event

A recent Technology Career event held by the College of Computer & Information Technology (CCIT) at St. Petersburg College drew more than 250 people interested in exploring careers in Technology.

Adam Doll, a senior recruiter at Veredus Corporation, a national Information Technology recruiting and staffing firm was the keynote speaker.  Doll presented an overview of the IT job market both nationally and in the Tampa Bay area, highlighting increasing shortages of qualified, educated staff. He then provided a three-year outlook of the IT jobs market to give underclassmen and college seekers an idea of what they may expect for a career in the future.

A panel of senior Information Technology executives then answered questions and provided an local perspective of the Information Technology career landscape:

  • Dan Doyle, CEO Bayside Solutions
  • Bruce Philipoom, VP of Infrastructure Raymond James
  • Andy Swenson, CIO UPC Insurance
  • Tony Francisco, CEO Var Dynamics

Topics discussed included available jobs, the qualifications employers are looking for in an Information Technology candidate, trends in Information Technology, salary expectations, Information Technology program options at SPC, and in general everything one needs to know to be prepared for a career in Information Technology.

Dr. Sharon Setterlind, Dean of the College of Computer & Information Technology, gave a brief overview of the college’s degree and certificate offerings that lead to a successful career.

Afterwards, local employers met one-on-one with attendees for question and answer sessions. The activity and enthusiasm in that room were exciting and it was obvious that both attendees and employers were benefiting from the experience. The local employers that participated were: BayCare, Bayside Solutions, DTCC, Raymond James, Var Dynamics, SMC software, UPC Insurance, Veredus, Vology and St. Petersburg College.

Several students left the event with interviews either scheduled or requested, and  employers noted that they were impressed by the quality of candidates St. Petersburg College can offer.

The event was a success because of the efforts of a team of SPC people who worked on the project including: Dr. William Cross, Sandra Beck, Susan Biszewski-Eber, Rosaria Pipitone, Tracy Garrett, Christy Boucher, Sharon Setterlind and a team of student volunteers.
