Student Expresses Gratitude to CCIT Department

Contributing writer

Thanks to Mrs. Ortiz and several other fine instructors that have contributed to my IT education, I am now working in the IT department for a large call center rather than taking calls. My income has doubled and I now enjoy what I do. My goal at SPC was to gain knowledge that would enable me to begin a career, which has been a lot of hard work. I also took the initiative of getting my certs along the way, so as to have a leg up on most others which made a big difference.

We use both Windows and LINUX at work; the majority of the servers are LINUX servers and we have approximately 120 UBUNTU workstations. We have approximately 100 Windows work stations running XP and Windows 7.

I look forward to continuing my learning with LINUX and Windows, along with everything else that I will need to dive into along the way. It is very nice to be getting paid for the profession I pursued. All the best to everyone!

  1. Congratulations!! Very inspiring story that encourages me to keep the hard work up. Could you elaborate on what certifications you pursued? I am interested to know if your type of position requires a common Linux cert like Linux+ or RHCE? SPC offers a Linux certification that I intend on achieving, I’m wondering if you hold the same SPC Linux admin cert. Thanks for the nice story!

  2. Certs are a great way to validate that you are committed and knowledgeable in areas, but should be taken at the end of a class or it will lose priority. They show initiative and drive. If you take the A+ courses, get the cert. Network+ coursework, get that cert as well. I did not bother with the Linux+ because it is two exams now and only valid for three years. CompTia certs were lifetime certs as long as you passed before 12/2010.
A+, Network+, Security+ were my first certs. Testout offers Labsim software at a discount to SPC students taking those related courses and prepares you for the exams and I used that to study for about 7 exams. CCNA and CCNA Security were two more to add upon completion of the CompNet AS. And since I had a couple of MS courses the MCITP Server 2008 Administrator was a must-have also. The Linux Admin Certificate was a compliment to the AS after the fact to shore up the degree. Take advantage of your MSDNAA account and learn some stuff by doing! Equipment can be purchased fairly cheap online and you will learn more by doing than cramming.
Study groups are available at the end of the Cisco courses through Mr. Gordon and others, which helped a lot for the CCNA stuff. The best way to learn is by repetitively doing and leaving the television and game console turned off.
    Good luck!
