St. Petersburg College Summer Recap

As summer is ending and students are preparing for the Fall semester, here’s a recap of some of SPC’s summer events and celebrations.

SPC Partnerships:

RCS Pinellas and SPC Partnership – On Aug. 8, SPC Midtown Center hosted a press conference to announce the partnership of RCS Pinellas and SPC to open the first RCS Express Center at the SPC Midtown Center.

Kick-off Event Celebrates First Cohort of PATHe Students – On Aug. 13, students participated in the Pinellas Access to Higher Education, or PATHe, program. The initiative is a partnership between SPC and the University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP) and is designed to help Pinellas County students and parents find pathways to higher education in the region.

Verizon Awards SPC with a $50,000 Grant for Student Success – For the third year in a row, Verizon awarded SPC a $50,000 grant. It continued the Verizon Scholarship for Student Success. The grant supports scholarships and programs for underserved students at SPC and in our community. Some of the SPC special programs the grant supports include:

  • PITCH, Women on the Way
  • Summer Learning Academy
  • Keys to Manhood
  • The Summer Bridge Program.

SPC Continues Guided Pathways Initiative Through a $30,000 Grant – SPC is one of 20 institutions to receive a $30,000 grant from the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) to scale the college’s current involvement with the American Association of Community College’s (AACC) Guided Pathways initiative. 

Kids Leave Care Fair with New Backpacks, Big SmilesThe Junior League of St. Petersburg (JLSP) and Community Health Centers of Pinellas, Inc. (CHCP) partnered with SPC to host the 23rd annual Back-to-School Care Fair on Saturday, July 27.

SPC Honors Scholars:

2019-20 Dr. Johnnie Ruth Clarke Scholars HonoredThe St. Petersburg Gibbs Campus Music Center hosted the Dr. Johnnie Ruth Clarke Scholars Award Ceremony on July 15.

SPC Students Recognized at City Council MeetingGraduates of St. Petersburg College’s PITCH program were recently recognized at the St. Petersburg City Council meeting at City Hall for their achievement.

Employees Continue to Strive for Success:

SPC Professor Leads the Plunge to Honor VeteransLongtime SPC Oceanography Professor Dr. Heyward Mathews led a creative vision. He created an underwater memorial of 24 statues. They represented the branches of the military and the conflicts they have faced over the years.

St. Petersburg College Wins League for Innovation Award – Several faculty and staff at SPC received the League for Innovation in the Community College (LICC) award in the Leadership and Organization category.

Summer Programs at SPC:

Summer Bridge Program Success at SPC– The Summer Bridge Program (SBP) assisted underrepresented males in acclimating and transitioning into SPC. The SBP seeks to promote self-efficacy, foster a sense of belonging, enhance academic performance, increase persistence and retention, and improve graduation and transfer rates amongst underrepresented males at St. Petersburg College.

High School Graduates Make Summer a Learning Experience – For six weeks, 100 recent high school graduates took classes at SPC’s Clearwater, Seminole, St. Petersburg/Gibbs and Tarpon Springs campuses as part of the annual Summer of Success program.

SPC Programs Continue to Succeed:

SPC Respiratory Care program receives Distinguished RRT Credentialing Success Award – The Respiratory Care Program received the Distinguished RRT Credentialing Success Award by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). This recognition is a standard of professional achievement for registered respiratory therapists (RRT).

SPC’s Nursing Program Leads the NCLEX Pass Rate -St. Petersburg College’s nursing program has one of the highest passing rates in the state of Florida for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). SPC’s NCLEX pass rate was 96.4%, which exceeds the Florida pass rate of 67.88% and the national pass rate of 86.48% during the second quarter.
