Excellence award honors high school students

During February, St. Petersburg College celebrated the remarkable accomplishments of Pinellas County’s minority high school students and their commitment to learning and hard work. These students, who achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA, received the Dr. Mac J. Williams Sr. Salute to Academic Excellence Award.

The award students received is named for Dr. Mac J. Williams Sr., a community activist, pastor and accomplished educator. Dr. Williams was the first African American to be elected chairman of the St. Petersburg College Board of Trustees. He served on the board from 1990 until his death in February 1993, imparting wisdom, vision and critical leadership in this often demanding role.

“Dr. Williams believed in the value of a quality education. I know he would join me in extending best wishes as they continue their path toward earning a high school diploma and beyond,” SPC President Tonjua Williams said.

In addition, the St. Petersburg College Foundation awarded 20 $500 scholarships to one student from each of the 20 high schools represented at the Dr. Mac J. Williams Excellence Awards presentations.
