On Tuesday, July 10, SPC held the 2018 Presidential Scholars Award Ceremony and Recognition at the Seminole Campus Digitorium. This year, the ceremony honored 35 students as SPC 2018 Presidential Scholars.
SPC’s Presidential Scholarship provides full tuition for 60 credit hours of study at St. Petersburg College. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding achievement among Pinellas County high school students. Graduating seniors from public, private, parochial and home-educated environments who have a minimum weighted GPA of 3.5 are eligible to apply. The Scholars’ had an average weighted GPA of 4.36.
Earl Fratus, Honors Program Director, welcomed the students and their families.
“Let me congratulate you, our students, on your tremendous success and welcome you to SPC,” Fratus said.
As Presidential Scholars, the College’s Honors Program automatically accepts the honored students. The program offers rigorous coursework, a focus on critical thinking skills and a multitude of leadership opportunities.
Dr. Jamelle Conner, Vice President of Student Services, lauded the students on their academic achievements.
“Your selection as Presidential Scholars is a testament to your choices, your dreams and your persistence,” Conner said.
Conner also spoke about the many opportunities the students have at SPC, including clubs, organizations, events, and support services like tutoring and career advising to help them succeed.
“I want all of you to know we value you and we’re here to support you,” she said.
2016 Presidential Scholar Madeline Fraire said the scholarship alleviated the stress of student loans and other financial burdens, which allowed her to pursue her dream.
“I am thankful to SPC for giving me every resource I need to be successful,” she said.
