With warm hugs and smiling faces, the Owens family made a special visit to meet SPC President Dr. Tonjua Williams during their Spring Break vacation. The family shared with Dr. Williams how they’ve visited many historical places but to actually meet someone who’s making history is life-changing.
Dr. Williams became the first African-American and first female president of St. Petersburg College in July 2017.
Inspired by Dr. Williams’ accomplishments and to honor her, Tanner and her younger sister Talen entered the 2018 Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott Black History Month Contest. Tanner, a fifth grader, summited an essay titled “Dreams Do Come True: An Innovative Woman.” Talen, a third grader, submitted a portrait of Williams.
During the Owens family visit, Dr. Williams encouraged the young ladies to stay focused on their education and to remember, “There’s absolutely, positively nothing you cannot do, period.”
Yesterday was an incredible moment with the Owens’ girls from Tallahassee! It was such an honor to meet them. Tanner (5th grade) wrote an essay about me, and Talen (3rd grade) drew a beautiful portrait of me for the FL Governor’s Black History Month Art and Essay Contest. These young ladies are so intelligent and will make history one day! #SPCInspires
