The Learning Resources team at the Downtown Center recently hosted an exciting hands-on event designed to spark creativity, teamwork and innovation among SPC students. In collaboration with SPC’s Engineering Club, the team held a two-part Robotics Competition at the Downtown Learning Center. All students were invited to participate with no prior experience required.
The competition began with an Introduction Session on Nov. 6, where students learned the basics of robot building, explored competition guidelines, and began working collaboratively in teams.
Guided by supportive staff and peers, participants had the opportunity to design and build robots that take on real-world inspired challenges.
The excitement continued with Competition Day on Nov. 20, where teams put their creations to the test. Students competed for prizes, including TI-84 calculators and the chance to showcase their engineering and problem-solving skills.
Parents, friends and community members, including program coordinators from the St. Pete Housing Authority, came out to watch and cheer on the students.

The winners of the competition were Hamza Suid, Margarita Munoz and Valeria Hernandez, enrolled in EMBA, Engineering and Vet Tech Programs, respectively.
Thanks to Learning Resources project coordinators Vinicio Castillo and Jason Brierton, and to SPC Engineering Club volunteers Genesis Rivera and Daunte (Xavier) Blue, for their leadership. The event highlights SPC’s commitment to hands-on learning and collaborative problem-solving while creating opportunities for students to connect across disciplines.
The Learning Resources team also came together to honor the achievements of two Midtown students, Dejai Williams and Linda Matthews at the Midtown Library.
The event was organized by Rita Cambridge, Senior Library Services Technician, to recognize students for exemplary perseverance, commitment and dedication to their academic success.
Both students received new backpacks and school supplies provided by the Student Government Association to continue their studies.
