Students from St. Petersburg College’s Veterinary Technology program recently expanded their global perspective through a transformative study abroad experience in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The trip provided a unique opportunity to explore international approaches to veterinary nursing education while immersing students in the rich culture and history of the region.
A highlight of the visit was time spent at University College Dublin, home to Ireland’s only veterinary school and a nationally recognized veterinary nursing program. Students learned how Irish veterinary nursing education integrates rigorous academic coursework with extensive hands-on clinical training, including rotations and practical skill assessments required for professional registration. This experience allowed SPC students to compare curriculum structure, clinical expectations, and professional standards across countries.
The group also visited North West Regional College and CAFRE College of Agriculture Food and Rural Enterprise, where they engaged with faculty and students to explore agricultural and further explored veterinary nurse training in Northern Ireland. These visits highlighted the strong connection between veterinary nursing, livestock management, and rural community needs.
While in Dublin, students toured the historic campus of Trinity College Dublin, gaining insight into one of Ireland’s most prestigious institutions and its role in healthcare education. The experience emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary learning and global collaboration in advancing veterinary and nursing professions.
Beyond academics, the trip offered unforgettable cultural experiences. Students participated in the vibrant St. Patrick’s Day parade in Derry, celebrating Irish heritage alongside the local community. They also explored iconic landmarks such as the Giant’s Causeway, known for its unique geological formations, and visited the dynamic city of Belfast.
This study abroad program not only enhanced students’ understanding of global veterinary nursing practices but also fostered cultural awareness, professional growth, and lifelong memories. Experiences like these prepare SPC Veterinary Technology students to become adaptable, knowledgeable professionals ready to contribute to animal care in an increasingly interconnected world.
