Studying abroad in Bonaire with SPC: I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Studying abroad in Bonaire

Studying abroad in Bonaire was the most memorable experience! Not only do you get to meet new people, try foreign foods and experience a new culture, you also receive college credit. During the course of my Study Abroad program to Bonaire our class was given the chance to scuba dive two to three times a day, plant corals, get certified through the Coral Restoration Foundation, explore caves by rock climbing down into them and snorkeling within the caves, we got to kayak and snorkel through mangroves and we got to clean the mangroves and beaches with Stinapa (National parks foundation). Being able to make a difference in the world and have fun doing it is a blessing and I am so thankful we were given the chance to work with many different foundations and learn more about how we can make a difference.

While studying abroad in Bonaire, we were able to see so many interesting wildlife like a Frogfish, Sea Turtles, Spotted Stingrays, Iguanas, donkeys, and flamingos all in their natural habitat. Observing the wildlife and learning about their behaviors is a very awesome thing that we got to experience. One of my favorite memories is when we were doing a night dive and we could see the difference between the marine life in the daytime versus the nighttime. Many of the species like the parrot fish or sea turtles sleep at night. We were able to observe the sleeping habit of an endangered Hawksbill sea turtle!  Also, at night we got to witness bioluminescent algae which were unreal! It was so amazing watching the algae light up whenever there was movement underwater. This was definitely a dive I will never forget.

If I would be able to go back and do it all again I would do it in a heartbeat!
