Experiencing winter in Canada

My trip to Canada was more than I could ever hope for. Since this was my first time going to Canada, I was not really sure what to expect. But after going, I already know that it will be a top highlight of 2019 for me.

The opportunity to play in snow was incredible–we were like reverse snowbirds! One activity I enjoyed was snow-shoeing at the Wyandot Indian Reserve.

There, we learned all about the Huron tribe. On their farms, they grew sunflowers for their seeds and hunted bison for food. At the Reserve, we were served sunflower soup and bison sausage. They were both delicious and the tie in between their culture and our experience was phenomenal.

Overall, in the six days we were in Canada, we had too many unique adventures to count. Some included going to a traditional sugar shack, touring a couple basilicas, and even tobogganing! If you are considering going to Canada with SPC, or just traveling in general, I 100% recommend that you take the opportunity to do it.

Seeing snow for the first time

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience on the study abroad Canada trip. Every activity we did was so interesting and fun, even the educational ones.

Even though it was hard to narrow it down, my favorite parts about this trip were seeing snow for the first time, trying unique foods that I have never tried before, walking through a forest with snow shoes on, and going tobogganing with all my new friends.

This trip made me go outside of my comfort zone and do things I normally wouldn’t; I’m glad I was given this opportunity by St. Petersburg College.

Tobogganing down a very steep hill

– Hannah Warner, SPC High School Student, Canada Program, January 2019

One of the many things we did on this trip, that I really enjoyed, was tobogganing down a very steep hill. I especially loved this activity because I love feeling a rush of adrenaline.

My friends and I were in a group of four and we hiked our toboggan up the steps to the loading area. At the top we loaded up and got ready to be sent down the hill. When the man released the toboggan we went flying. We were going so fast and all you could see was colors of light flying past. I could only hear laughter and screaming until we finally got to the bottom. Even then, we had all had such a great time the laughter didn’t stop until minutes later.

We experienced so many wonderful things on this trip. It was absolutely incredible. I am so glad I was able to be a part of it and will always enjoy looking back at all the fun we had.
