Segovia y Avila by Jaclyn Jardine

Salamanca has been such a great city to attend school daily and visit the cathedrals, plaza and shops. The smaller towns outside are worth the trip. We visited the famous Spanish castle, Alcazar de Segovia, set upon a mountain top in the town of Segovia. Also present is the 2000 year old Roman aqueduct. Incredible sights and lively downtown. The town of Avilla is host to a 2.3 km wall which was built in the 11th to 14th century to protect the small town. Interior to the 12 meter tall walls are museums, palaces, cathedrals, and historical landmarks. I really enjoyed walking along the top of the walls with a hand held narration which told of the stories and legends associated with Avila. The town is known for the Yemans de St Theresa yemans which is a delightful sweet treat made from egg yolks and sugar. I would highly recommend these day trips from Salamanca. I was able to navigate successfully thanks to the Spanish I have learned with St. Petersburg College and Estudio Sampere.
