Rays Baseball Broadcaster visits SPC! by Anna Faiola

henryEnrique “Henry” Oliu, the Spanish-language radio analyst for the Tampa Bay Rays came to SPC on April 8. Sponsored by the Latinos United Club at the SPC Tarpon Springs campus, Enrique presented an inspirational speech as he shared personal stories and adventures about his life.

Enrique is a unique and inspiring man who grew up in Nicaragua listening to baseball and soccer on the radio. His interest in broadcasting blossomed after he moved to the United States to attend the Florida School for the Blind and Deaf when he was 10.  While he’s been blind since birth, this never once was an obstacle for him, as he fought hard to reach his dreams.

Instead of dwelling on his disability, he has stayed focused on the bigger picture of what he can do. Since the day the Tampa Bay Rays threw out their inaugural pitch on March 31, 1998, Enrique has been the Spanish-language radio commentator for the team.

St. Petersburg College students were touched by his words and are thankful to have had him as a guest speaker.
