Even though we had the day off yesterday, Sunday, August 5, 2012 we refused to take the day off from fun or learning! We went into San Jose to shop. It was an interesting experience because many of the small vendors only speak their native tongue of Spanish and most our group only speaks English. It also took some time to understand the currency conversions as $499.50 Colones (Costa Rican currency) is equal to $1.00 Dollars (USA currency). It was interesting to watch many of us, including myself, attempting to negotiate prices as there was a language barrier. I found that body language and hand gestures can make a difference as many of us were able to successfully negotiate a lower price that was fair for both the merchant and consumer. It was a very interesting day and hope that we have time to do it again before our departure!
