Italy: It has been truly a blessing to be here!

Today was our last day of touring and what at day! It was packed tight with churches museums and one really awesome park. I am so thankful and excited that I got the opportunity to study abroad.

Today we saw five different churches all over the city of Roma and each one was breathtaking but the one thing that really stood out to me today was the Galleria Borghese. Which was set in the beautiful and massive park in the middle of town. This galleria housed some of the master pieces of one of my all-time favorite sculptors, Gian Lorenzo Bernini.  The one piece that really stuck me in the gallery was “Ratto di Proserpina” a Baroque marble sculptural. In this work depicts the Greek legend of Hadis, god of the underworld stealing Proserpina the daughter of Zeus and Demeter and taking her down to the underworld for half there year, while her mother Demeter goddess of the harvest weeps and searchers for her lost daughter, the land is barren and nothing grows, when Proserpina is allowed back up from the underworld her mother is happy again the land flourishes this is how the ancient Greeks explained the seasons. But with all that said the level of detail this work has is what really made it stick in my mind. The way he made the hand of Hades grabbing Proserpina he made it look like that they were two people frozen in time, and even the single tear drop running down her face was another remarkable aspect of this sculpture. The hair on the three headed down named Sirius, was incredible.  Over all I have learned a lot about myself and about the history and culture of Italy it has been truly a blessing to be here.
