SPC student, Bonnie Williamson, shares her experience in Greece with St. Petersburg College after receiving a study abroad scholarship:
“I initially chose to do the Greece Study Abroad program as it seemed interesting to be able to take a class out of the standard online/classroom style of learning. While reviewing the itinerary for this trip, I realized that it would be a great way to learn some of the history in person related to the class materials that we would be covering. However, after taking the Greece Study Abroad program it provided me with much more than I had expected. This program took me places that I would not ever have thought of going. Museums, Ancient sites and Monasteries were on the itinerary that I have never even heard of. On top of that, the Study Abroad program also taught us lessons in traveling internationally. Finally, the program also gave me the ability to interact with different cultures and see how these different cultures live and work in their daily lives.
The scholarship program for the Study Abroad program was an immense help to all of us. It took a lot of the financial pressure off. This allowed me to stay focused on the trip and the classwork without having to stress about the financial impact. This also gave me the opportunity to engage in social activities with the group and build lasting relationships with the rest of the students.
I would encourage any student to look into a Study Abroad program. Each program has its own benefits and itineraries, but all have something special that each student can take back with them. Study abroad provides a deeper understanding of the culture visited, a different perspective on the world and a different approach to learning the class content. In addition, the study abroad program can also help students become more comfortable with travelling abroad. Doing this with a group helps relieve the stress of traveling alone for the first time and ease the burden of long distance traveling. Working together as a group makes the trip much easier, but most of all, more fun! I would highly recommend every student studies abroad at least once!” –Bonnie Williams, SPC student, Greece 2018
