Giving patients a new start by Anna Faiola

Well today at our morning meeting I volunteered to stay back at the Sandals resort staff clinic and do hygiene care on the staff of the resort instead of going to the New Market location I was originally assigned. We set up a similar clinic as to the one we setup at New Market which from what my other colleges described were all fairly similar. Today was very exciting as it was the first day I was unsure as what to expect. So after breakfast Desiree and I went to the staff clinic to provide patient care on the staff of the resort. At first no one showed up which was kind of upsetting so I volunteered to round up some patients. This was a big mistake because after we got started the patients seemed to show up out of nowhere. Desiree and I saw patients one after another straight through lunch right up until 5:00 pm I was exhausted and there were still several patients waiting outside the door. I felt bad but had to turn them away as we were supposed to finish up at 4:30pm.

I really enjoyed providing the care to the staff of the resort they were extremely polite and appreciative. I felt that I made a huge difference in some of their lives. There was one young man that came in with severe calculus and stain supra and sub gingival generalized throughout his oral cavity. I asked about his oral habits and about his home-care routine. He told me that he brushed everyday but he was unable to get the stain off of his teeth since he used to be a smoker. I made him promise that after I cleaned the calculus and stain off his teeth that he would never smoke again and would maintain his oral care and he agreed. I really felt that I gave him a new start to his oral health. After a long and rewarding day of patient care and skipping lunch I was ready to relax at the resort.
