Diva! and One Love! by Stephanie Bondaryk

The definition of a diva while here in Jamaica is a person who is late to a meeting or some other type of scheduled event. It is now Sunday and I was suppose to blog on Thursday, so I now hold the title of Diva for blogging. 🙂

What can I say about my experience here in this beautiful country of Jamaica…there are no words to describe the love this country has.  One Love is their motto here and you truly see it in each and every one of them. I remember going into the schools each day and the children just instantly come up to you and give you hugs. By the end of our week, the children would just cry and cry that we were leaving and we cried with them. It has been an emotional roller coaster this past week and I would not have traded that for anything in the world. A particularly sad time for me, which I still tear up when I think of it, was when the 6th graders came in to write back to their pen pal’s from my practicum class this semester and two of the boys did not know any phonics. That moment just broke my heart and it took everything I had to just not start crying right there and then. That moment also made me realize how important the teaching we do with them is and makes me want to come back next year.  It wasn’t all sad though, I really saw some students shine during this time. Three of the 3rd grade girls were choral reading with the same books and that was an awesome sight to see, their prosody was just fantastic! Overall, my time here in Jamaica was just incredible and I am sad to see it end. I am hoping that next year I will be able to come again and see all of my Great Shape, Inc! family and Jamaican students. Until we meet again, One Love!
