If You are Nervous About Studying Abroad – Forget Those Fears and Just Do It!

study abroad program

This isn’t my first trip abroad. This isn’t even my first study abroad with SPC. But this trip to Salamanca is one of my favorite experiences ever.

The culture in Spain is completely different than the US. The late starts to the day, siestas and late dinners came as kind of a culture shock. It came as a surprise that after I went for a morning run with professora Levin, none of the stores were open to get a water at 8:00am. On the other hand it’s a perk to be able to snack on delicious tapas late into the night with friends.

The new friends I have made on this trip have been a big reason why I have enjoyed myself so much. I didn’t know anyone in the group when I left the states. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming. We truly are one big family. I clicked instantly with my roommate Anthony. You won’t see me in Salamanca without him. After the first day Anthony and I formed the “cuatro amigos” with Escottie and Jaci. Eytan, professora Levin’s son who has been on the trip before has taught us all some things about the city and Spanish, and we have taught him a little as well.

For those reading this that’s are nervous about coming to Spain because you don’t feel like Spanish is up to par, forget those fears. I had not spoken Spanish for 5 years prior to the trip. The teachers at the school are all patient and despite having multiple classes a day they still care about you and give you personal attention. There are also people like Valerie and Chase who will help you on a daily basis. Nothing has brought more joy to those of us who speak Spanish on the trip, than having our beginning level classmates communicate in Spanish with us after just two weeks of class.

Spain is a beautiful country. The stone and marble facade of the buildings are works of art. I can’t wait to come back to the country with other friends to use my Spanish and see friends.
