A warm Shokran (that’s “thank you” in Arabic) to everyone who helped make Clearwater campus’s April 1 Middle Eastern Quad Event such a success!
More than 375 students joined in to enjoy this unique learning experience about Middle Eastern cultures. A local restaurant provided delicious authentic Middle Eastern dishes for students to try, and attendees also delighted in live music and dance performances. SPC International Programs student worker and organizer of the event, Jasmine Shamsi, helped students try on traditional head dress (Hijab), and volunteers from the local Middle Eastern community provided the opportunity for students to experience other cultural items such as Tarboosh (a traditional hat that is worn by the men in Syria, Jordan, Egypt, etc.) and Chmag (a traditional head dress that is worn by the men who live in Saudi Arabia and on the Gulf region).
Students and faculty alike had wonderful things to say about the event:
Julie Gomez, Student Success Manager, advisor for the Clearwater Campus Phi Theta Kappa Tau Zeta chapter and the American Arab Cultural Association
Congratulations on a wonderful event! As always proud to be one of your club advisors.
Courtney Kent
Today’s quad event made me proud to call myself a Clearwater SPC student. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing more of our world’s beauty.
Lena Esayed
It was the best quad event this semester. The highlight of it was seeing how non-Muslims interacted with hijab and trying out different culture. I also loved how people kept asking me stuff and one girl was talking about how the media makes us seem horrible but we really aren’t. It’s nice to see a small event have a big impact.
Prasong Koumphon
I enjoyed the music the most because it’s new to what I normally listen to especially from a different culture.
Domenica Flores
I like when I put the Hijab on and the food was delicious, I basically love everything!!
Mildred Davis
The food was delicious especially the Tabouli (hmmmmmm yummmmy). As matter of fact, I personally asked Jasmine Shamsi about the recipe.

International Programs was thrilled to repeat the annual visit to Florida’s state government seat at Tallahassee with Dr. Law on March 18 and 19, 2015. Forty-seven students participated in this fantastic learning experience, eleven of whom were SPC international students. Sane Haidara, originally of Mali, had the following reaction to his experience:
We went to Tallahassee this week to visit the Senate, the House and to meet Florida legislators. The trip allowed me and a number of SPC students to attend a House Education Committee meeting and mock legislative session Thursday morning, March 19. The tour was very informative, and we experienced how an idea becomes a bill and is finally implemented as a law. Furthermore, we were able to exchange business cards with lawmakers. I believe this experience at the State Capitol has enhanced my leadership skills, and will help inform how I can help my home country, Mali, in addressing the issues we are facing.
-Sane Haidara
