On Oct. 10, 2016 the College of Nursing welcomed Cindy Ruiz, a BSN student from the Universidad El Bosque in Bogota, Colombia. During the 2-week exchange experience, Cindy attended classes, participated in simulation and visited healthcare facilities. One of the days, she was able to shadow a staff nurse at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in the cardiovascular intensive care unit.
This exchange experience with the Universidad El Bosque’s Nursing program marks the culmination of a year-long process of developing a cooperative relationship between our nursing programs. The intent of this experience for the nursing students is to increase their exposure to other cultures and healthcare modalities.

Hey Everybody! I know it’s been a while since I wrote my last post, but the last week of classes was really hectic and then I went and spent a few days in Ireland, which was great!
So rather than just talking about what I did the last week like I had for all of the other posts, I’m want to talk about the over all experience. To say that I loved this trip is an understatement. I think that I really grew as a person while I was there. Deciding to study abroad was by far one of the best decision that I have every made. Not only for me as a person, but as an educational standpoint. What could have been better than studying Shakespeare in London and going to see the plays that we’re analyzing in class in the replica of Shakespeare’s own Globe Theater? I have a whole new appreciation for Shakespeare from this experience. It’s amazing to see the places you read about and be there. It gives you a better understanding on the surrounding.
As for what I did the last week, we went on a couple of field trips I got to see Macbeth at the Globe, and I went on London of Oscar Wilde walking tour. A couple of my friends and I went to do our readings in Hyde Park on one of the warmer days and found peace in the cool shade of the trees. I was finally able to go see the Peter Pan statue that is there as well, which is something that I have always wanted to do. It was a really great last week, and this was an experience that I will never forget.
Soon a group of SPC students will be taking off to start their educational adventure in South Africa. The students can look forward to visiting Robben Island, which has become a major symbol of South Africa’s political struggles – the great leader and statesman Nelson Mandela was imprisoned there for 18 years (1964-1982). They will also get to view Table Mountain and tour the Cape Peninsula.
Here are some important tips to keep in mind while preparing for your trip:
Don’t forget to bring clothes that are cool, light and comfortable because summer temperatures can be anywhere from the mid 80’s- high 90’s in some areas.
Its a good idea to pack an umbrella or raincoat because this is when most of the country gets its rain. Thundershowers are common in many areas.
Don’t be flashy! Bringing expensive jewelry and other flashy items with you while traveling is not advisable. If they are not necessary for travel leave them at home!
Have a safe trip and we will see you back on the 6th!
Fun Fact: South Africa is well-known for its medical skill since Professor Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful heart transplant in 1967. There are many world-class private hospitals and medical centers around the country, especially in the urban centers!
Happy belated Independence Day! I’m writing a little bit later this week so that I could tell you about my 4th of July in London. I hate to break it to you guys, but it was really boring. There was no celebrations, no fireworks and to my disappointment, no sparklers. A couple of other students and I went out to dinner to “celebrate” but that was it.
On the topic of independence, as most of you know, as of the 23rd of June the UK has left the European Union. There are nonviolent protests in the streets with people who feel that leaving the EU was the wrong decision. There are also signs in peoples windows saying to vote to stay. The leave vote won 52%-48% so the vote was very close. Britain has two years to negotiate trading and boarder policies and such. Things are uncertain here. The Prime Minister has chosen to step down by October, even though he was the one to call the vote. Unfortunately it’s hard to give you more information on what they are doing because the negotiations won’t be finished for another 2 years.

Outside the Tower of London
The White Tower
Inside Tower Bridge
On a bit of a brighter note I did have my London Pass this past weekend and was able to see the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, and I even got to go ice-skating with some friends. The Crown Jewels, as well as all of the old armor are all amazingly detailed in every aspect. It’s amazing to see so many pieces of history all in one place. Tower Bridge was fun, and parts of the bridge have glass floors so you can see the Thames beneath you. Ice-skating was fun, and it was the first time skating for a couple of the people who I went with. Westminster Abbey by far was my favorite experience of the weekend. The abbey was beautiful and everything was so detailed. Just being in there was humbling. Not just because of how big and grand everything is, but also because of the fact that you are in the presence of kings and queens and poets. All of these people who have done so much for history and shaped the world today.
Anyway that is all for this week. I’m going on some really cool field trips this week and I can’t wait to tell you guys all about it.
