Last day in Costa Rica for the Vet Tech students by Kathryn McGeehan

GOPR0364It is sad to say that this amazing journey is coming to an end.

After spending 10 amazing days in Costa Rica it is time to head to the airport and leave to go back home.

Over these past 10 days I have learned so much about Costa Rica, the wildlife, the wonderful group of people that I went with, and most importantly I made life memories that will never be forgotten.

I got to see and do things that I never thought would of been possible without volunteering at LAST.

I would love to go back to Costa Rica next summer and do it all over again.

Tortugas in Costa Rica by Kathryn McGeehan

1451445_10204153896785637_6879249905430735424_nWe spent our second day in Costa Rica trying to catch sea turtles. We set our nets in the water and went up to the beaches waiting for one to swim into the nets. While we were waiting, we all went swimming and enjoyed exploring the beach. In the water we were able to find different types of coral and live rock.

There were also three adorable dogs that lived on the beach we were at that had fun following us and spending the day with us. We were able to catch a Hawksbill turtle which was a treat for us since it was the first of that species that we had caught so far on this trip. We took measurements of her and recorded her tag numbers.

We also made observations of the worms that were living on the shell.

After we finished we carried her to the water to release her. It was amazing to watch her swim back to the water and eventually disappear into the water.

Whale watching and horseback riding by Kathryn McGeehan

On our first day off in Costa Rica we spent the day whale watching and going horseback riding. We were very lucky that we were able to see whales because it was the first day of the season. We were able to see Humpback Whales, and we were able to get amazing pictures of them. After we finished our whale tour, we went horseback riding. We went down a trail through the jungle where we saw wild macaws in the trees. We took the horses down to the beach and walked down the beach before heading back. It was amazing to see whales in person.
