SPC students increase Spanish fluency through immersion course in Spain

Communicating in Spanish while exploring historic towns during study abroad in Spain.

The history and culture of Spain

Studying abroad in Salamanca is more than learning Spanish. It is an adventure deep into the history and culture of Spain from the people who know it best!!

From day one, the welcoming hugs from my host family and familiar faces of SPC made this an easy approach for a first time study abroad student. We started with a guided tour through the city and in following days we learned more in- depth history.

With all the new experiences to take in, you lose yourself to completely feel submerged in the culture while learning a language and continuing your college degree.

An invaluable learning experience

– Symantha Senn, SPC Student, Spain Program, June 2019

As a recipient of a study abroad scholarship, I have had an amazing opportunity these past three weeks to learn Spanish in Spain. Picture a little city called Salamanca where there are churches and ancient buildings galore, each with a different unique story.

Although it was the most intensive course I have ever faced, each professor that worked there was friendly and made sure that everyone understood the content. Learning a language is very difficult, but the experience that I have gained with this program is invaluable.

Being immersed in the culture of Spain and being wrapped in the beauty of Spanish was an amazing time and I am grateful to have been a part of another SPC study abroad program.

Immersion in Spain and its culture

– Skippi Mahas, SPC Student, Spain Program, June 2019

Studying abroad is an opportunity that should not be passed up. I had always wanted to participate in a program like this, so when the opportunity arose, I jumped on it and am not disappointed at all.

As soon as I stepped off the bus in Salamanca, my host mom greeted me with open, welcoming arms. It was a bit difficult to communicate with her at first because she didn’t speak English and I was nowhere near good enough to speak in Spanish. However, after a couple of days , communication was no problem.

The flag of Spain.

Being immersed in the culture and language made learning Spanish so much easier. During the class, you learn a lot of information in a short period of time but practicing with your family and the people in the community helps more than you could imagine.

The instructors at Estudio Sampere are fantastic. They seem to really care about the students and are passionate about their jobs. I can’t even begin to describe it; instead, you should come to Spain next summer to see it for yourself.

Memorable challenges

– Ena Salkicic, SPC Student, Spain Program, June 2019

My time in Salamanca was quite an interesting one. I spent three weeks with a host mother living with two other roommates. Our walk to school was thirty minutes, but it was good because we got in a lot of exercise to compensate for all the carbs we ate, so I enjoyed it.

There were a lot of excursions on this trip which made it a little difficult to keep up with school work as my roommate and I moved up a level a week in the course.

There was definitely a lot of necessary studying and tutoring was offered every morning at 10:00 am in a café to work with the professors. If you are planning on going to Spanish III for this trip, I highly suggest being well-versed in most all of the tenses leading up to future and subjunctive.

Overall, I think this journey was definitely an eye-opener and will remember it for years to come.

Spanish-only immersion

– Kervin, Ryan Michael, SPC Student, Spain Program, June 2019

My experience with SPC in Spain was amazing. The program has students live with a Spanish-speaking family in an entirely Spanish-speaking environment. This has helped me learn Spanish significantly better than any classroom experience in the United States.

The immersion incorporated in this program really helps students experience a new culture and way of life. The Spanish classes are also great and the professors are very kind and helpful. They incorporate Spanish constantly, but are very patient and just want us to learn and understand Spanish.

The SPC España study abroad program is a great experience!

SPC student’s community service met with love in Jamaica

Applying concepts learned at SPC to serve a community in need becomes a heartwarming experience during study abroad in Jamaica

– Elizabeth Cornelius, SPC Student, Jamaica Dental Program, October 2018

Being selected for the Jamaica Study Abroad Program was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. From start to finish, it was an amazing experience.

After the selection process was complete, our group of ten students came together as one and raised funds and supplies to be able to make this trip possible. We had a blast bonding and it made the trip that much more exciting to go on together.

We finally made it to Jamaica after ten months of fundraising, and my feelings towards the experience cannot be put into words. From day one, I fell in love with the people there and what they stand for, “One Love.” I have never felt as loved and appreciated as I did while I was there.

The purpose of our trip was not only to expand our dental skills and knowledge that we have learned at SPC, but also to be able to give back to those who did not have access to dental care like we do in the United States.

I did not realize how much I would gain in return. Our group provided dental cleanings and care for five days and it was nothing short of amazing. I met so many beautiful people, learned about a culture I did not know much about before, and was able to step outside my comfort zone to serve those less fortunate.

I thought I was going there to help change their lives, but ultimately, they changed ours. I returned home with a new appreciation for everything. I have fresh eyes when it comes to the opportunities that we have, where we live, the chance to go to such an amazing college where we are treated with such respect, appreciation for our houses, medicine, and all that surrounds us.

I was truly blessed by this study abroad opportunity and I hope to be able to continue to give back throughout the rest of my dental hygiene career.

SPC student explores historic architecture during excursions in Spain

Traveling abroad for the first time and learning language, history, culture, and a wedding dance during study abroad in Spain.

– Makennah LeMay, SPC Student, Spain Program, June 2019

My experience in España so far has been unforgettable. This being my first time traveling alone or outside of the country, I was a little nervous, but the friendly environment and amazing cultural experiences have made Salamanca feel like home.

My teachers in class at Estudio Sampere have encouraged and inspired me to increase my Spanish speaking a great amount. With the support of my teachers, classmates and many others I’ve met along the way, I feel like my Spanish has increasingly gotten better.

The sights here in Spain have been the most breathtaking scenery I’ve ever experienced. One of the things I find very impressive about Spain is its architecture. The cathedral de Salamanca was the most beautiful church I’ve ever been to. This massive work of art was nothing like I’d ever seen or would ever see in the United States.

In the town of Salamanca, there are always events and activities to do. Between the Festival de Luz in the Plaza Major and the spectacular firework show we saw, I can say the town of Salamanca is definitely entertaining.

Local excursions

This past Saturday my class and I traveled to Cáceres, a medieval town about 2 hours away from Salamanca. We took a tour of the town which allowed us to enjoy the rich history and gorgeous sights this town has to offer. Some classmates and I even took it upon ourselves to join a traditional wedding dance with some locals in the middle of the plaza.

On Sunday the class and I took a trip to Peña de Francia and La Alberca. Peña de Francia was a medieval town located on the top of a mountain. It featured a gorgeous church and a beautiful mountain top view. After that we went to the small town of La Alberca.

With these towns’ interesting history and peaceful scenery, I was able to enjoy a truly unique piece of Spain. I look forward to seeing new sights, having more cultural experiences, and bettering my Spanish while here on my study abroad program in Spain.

SPC student inspired by tea ceremony and colorful temples in Japan

In awe of architectural splendors and calming traditional rituals during study abroad in Japan.

– Cierra Howard, SPC Student, Japan Program, May 2019

When I was approved for the Japan study abroad program, and received the email that I was awarded a scholarship, my eyes instantly filled with tears. This helped ease my burden so I could plan my days in the lovely city of Tokyo.

On the plane to Japan, the gentleman sitting next to me was so kind. He was traveling to Thailand for work. Once I told him where our group was headed, he assured me that I would gain a lifetime of memories. He made my flight so much better.

When we landed, I was so happy. Japanese culture was proudly displayed all through the airport. That made my emotions all the more real. Also, our tour guide Yu-san was so sweet and adorable. His hat was a great welcome to Japan.

Seeing Japanese temples and shrines was an amazing part of the trip. The elegant and rich colors of the Buddha temple gave chills. How extraordinary it is that people can walk by and see this every day?

The traditional tea ceremony we had gave me a feeling of calmness and acceptance. In fact, this intimate and honorable ceremony had everyone in our group calm–a first in Japan for these American Students! This experience was the most memorable part of this trip.  Patience is easily the Japanese motto.

Saying goodbye to the lifelong friends I made was toughest thing overall. It’s amazing that every time I think about Japan, I get to remember the amazing people who were with me on this journey. I hope they know of the everlasting impact they’ve left on me.

SPC students offer dental hygeine in Jamaican clinics, return inspired

Applying learned skills in local communities inspires career-path satisfaction and two-way gratitude during study abroad in Jamaica.
A humbling, life-changing experience

– Julaine Moya, SPC Student, Jamaica Dental Program, October 2018

SPC dental hygiene students visit local classrooms.

I will begin by saying that my participation in the dental hygiene study abroad program in Jamaica was life changing. It was a totally humbling experience.

I absolutely loved the mindset and lifestyle of our Caribbean friends; they are so full of love and gratitude. I was fortunate to treat patients in Jamaican clinics and educate children at a local elementary school. I still cannot grasp the fact that I have a skill that made these people so happy and feel so grateful.

In general, this trip changed my heart, it was complete magic. I will remember this experience for the rest of my life.

Being appreciated for one’s skills, talents, and knowledge

– Leonarda Malyemezian, SPC Student, Jamaica Dental Program, October 2018

Jamaica Dental Program students raise funds for their trip.

The day I found out I was one of ten chosen for this program, I was beyond excited! I couldn’t wait to get started on all the things we were going to have to do to make our way to Jamaica.

When we arrived in Jamaica, my excitement turned into much more than I could ever put into words. I was ready to get to work. Every morning I was ready to go out and clean teeth and educate the men, women, and children of Jamaica, emphasizing the importance of good oral hygiene.

It was such a blessing of an experience. I felt so honored to be able to apply my skills, talents, and knowledge in a culture that not only needed these things, but appreciated them. The rate at which I learned and applied my proficiencies was exponential.

Beyond me helping the Jamaican people, they helped me to solidify the passion I have for dental hygiene and gave me reassurance in knowing that I am where I am supposed to be!

“I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

– Greta Middlebrooks, SPC Student, Jamaica Dental Program, October 2018

SPC students make memorable impacts in Jamaica.

My experience studying abroad in Jamaica was incomparable. As in any country, some areas were lower income and others were not.

We served in the lower income communities, providing them with the services of dental prophylaxis, scaling, oral hygiene instruction, sealants, and more; while they provided us with an experience that cannot be matched.

One of the locations where we volunteered was a beautiful stone church on top of a hill with an incredible view of the ocean. There is so much that I could have said about this experience, but all you really need to know is I would do it again in a heartbeat.

SPC student finds peace at the top of Mount Komagatake in Japan

Exploring cultural heritage, visiting a shintō shrine, and leaving a mountaintop marker during study abroad in Japan.

– Johnathan Yong, SPC Student, Japan Program, May 2019

Our experience in Japan was a week long but one day resonated with me the most. Over the trip, there were many soaring highs and a few lows, but I feel like this day encompasses all the feelings I had during study abroad in Japan.

On the 5th day of the trip, we had to wake up bright and early because we had a very tight agenda to follow. That was the day we went to Mount Fuji. Our agenda for the day was to go to the Fujisan World Heritage center, arrive at the 5th station of Mount Fuji, take a small boat ride on Lake Ashinoko, and then climb Mount Komagatake by cable car.

This whole day was my favorite; however, the coolest part was actually not at Mount Fuji, but when we took the cable car up Mount Komagatake. We traveled all the way to the top of the mountain, and seeing a shrine up there was an unforgettable experience. It was very peaceful up on the mountain, it almost felt as if someone could meditate and find oneself there.

I made a rock tower with my friend James and we got 15 rocks up before we couldn’t put any more on, so we left it at that. Hopefully, the rock tower is still there and standing until this day. Who knows? Maybe someone has figured out a way to add another rock…

SPC student has “rewarding, spiritual, and life-changing experience” in Jamaica

An unforgettable professional and cultural exchange during study abroad in Jamaica.

-Nicole Robinson, SPC Student, Jamaica Dental Program, October 2018

“Being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure.” –Bob Marley.

Vulnerability is what I allowed myself to experience in Jamaica. The love, kindness, and hospitality the people of Jamaica showed to me will forever be in my heart. Rarely a day goes by that I do not think about the ten days we all spent working in the clinics and visiting the neighborhoods.

Living in Jamaica is another way of life that seems so foreign. In the United States, I have everything from running water to clothes in my closet, but for some reason, it feels like it’s not enough. In Jamaica, as long as they have one another and some food on the table with a little shelter, they are completely content.

Last October, we made it to Jamaica safe and sound. The country is so beautiful with mountains on your right and the ocean on your left, with the bluest waters. We were greeted with such kindness upon arriving at the hotel and that kindness never stopped.

Everyday working in the clinics was different yet the same. The days were long, hot, and challenging at times. We each worked on eight to twelve patients a day who have never been to dentist and had been standing in line since 4:00 am every morning. In the U.S., those patients would have been rude and complaining but not in Jamaica, they were so thankful we were there.

When people ask: “How was Jamaica?” I cannot give them a clear answer. The days I spent there with the citizens of Jamaica and the forever bonds I created–there is no way I can put the impact of it into words. I always have to pause a second from tearing up because it was honestly the most rewarding, spiritual, and life-changing experience I have ever had in my life.

I will be forever grateful to Mrs. Krueger and Dr. Krueger for taking us on this incredible journey.

SPC student sees new landscapes and familiar characters in Japan

Discovering the real-life landmarks on which familiar fiction is based during study abroad in Japan.

– Gyfton Bjornberg-King , SPC Student, Japan Program, May 2019

The adventures through the land of the rising sun were amazing. The two weeks that I spent in Japan opened my eyes to the differences within the world. I truly found the experiences to be life altering. There have been so many things that I have read online and heard from others; however, I did not think that I would ever have the chance to see Japan.

I have seen several pictures of Mt. Fuji and Tokyo Tower, but until I was given this opportunity to actually see these locations, I thought I never would. I am forever grateful for this life experience.

One of the most amazing parts of the trip was the Tokyo Tower. I found the structure amazing for several reasons, including my own personal identification with the structure from certain previous experiences.

Tokyo Tower at night. Photo by Taro Tokyo, Wikimedia Commons [CC BY-SA 3.0].

One example of this personal identification is from a board game called King of Tokyo. The game has a picture of the Tokyo Tower that I see every time I play.

I have also played a video game (Destroy All Humans 2) where Tokyo is one of the visited locations and you can fly around in a spaceship past Tokyo Tower.

These personal identifications made it almost surreal to view the structure with my own eyes and even more so when I found out that One Piece, the popular pirate anime and one of my favorites, had taken up a permanent theme park residence within Tokyo Tower.

Other than the awesome Tokyo Tower, we also visited the breathtaking Mt. Fuji where we were able to see the mountain from various places. We were able to view the porous stony side of the mountain itself, and saw it again from an amazing ferry ride, and from a shrine upon another mountaintop nearby.

Again, I would not have been able to see such amazing things if it weren’t for St. Petersburg College Foundation, the EF program, and everyone else who made this fanciful dream a reality.

SPC high school students develop winter sport skills in Canada

Snowshoeing, tobogganing, and trying maple syrup during study abroad in Canada.
Experiencing winter in Canada

– Elein Sullivan, SPC High School Student, Canada Program, January 2019

Elein Sullivan.

My trip to Canada was more than I could ever hope for. Since this was my first time going to Canada, I was not really sure what to expect. But after going, I already know that it will be a top highlight of 2019 for me.

The opportunity to play in snow was incredible–we were like reverse snowbirds! One activity I enjoyed was snow-shoeing at the Wyandot Indian Reserve.

There, we learned all about the Huron tribe. On their farms, they grew sunflowers for their seeds and hunted bison for food. At the Reserve, we were served sunflower soup and bison sausage. They were both delicious and the tie in between their culture and our experience was phenomenal.

Overall, in the six days we were in Canada, we had too many unique adventures to count. Some included going to a traditional sugar shack, touring a couple basilicas, and even tobogganing! If you are considering going to Canada with SPC, or just traveling in general, I 100% recommend that you take the opportunity to do it.

Seeing snow for the first time

– Olivia Schlei, SPC High School Student, Canada Program, January 2019

Olivia Schlei.

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience on the study abroad Canada trip. Every activity we did was so interesting and fun, even the educational ones.

Even though it was hard to narrow it down, my favorite parts about this trip were seeing snow for the first time, trying unique foods that I have never tried before, walking through a forest with snow shoes on, and going tobogganing with all my new friends.

This trip made me go outside of my comfort zone and do things I normally wouldn’t; I’m glad I was given this opportunity by St. Petersburg College.

Tobogganing down a very steep hill

– Hannah Warner, SPC High School Student, Canada Program, January 2019

One of the many things we did on this trip, that I really enjoyed, was tobogganing down a very steep hill. I especially loved this activity because I love feeling a rush of adrenaline.

Hannah Warner.

My friends and I were in a group of four and we hiked our toboggan up the steps to the loading area. At the top we loaded up and got ready to be sent down the hill. When the man released the toboggan we went flying. We were going so fast and all you could see was colors of light flying past. I could only hear laughter and screaming until we finally got to the bottom. Even then, we had all had such a great time the laughter didn’t stop until minutes later.

We experienced so many wonderful things on this trip. It was absolutely incredible. I am so glad I was able to be a part of it and will always enjoy looking back at all the fun we had.

SPC students experience joys of giving and receiving in Jamaica

Becoming “better students, better clinicians, and better human beings” during study abroad in Jamaica.
Instructing kids in good dental care

-Kittikan Sangthongtong, SPC Student, Jamaica Dental Program, October 2018

I am so blessed and thankful for the opportunity to attend the Jamaica dental study abroad program with SPC. What I experienced in Jamaica is priceless and can’t be described with words. The number of people in need of dental care in Jamaica is surreal, and I am very happy to have helped provide dental care to people who needed it.

On my first day in the clinical setting, I had the opportunity to apply sealants to the children who came for an oral exam.

I was also able to explain and educate the students on why I was applying the sealants on their teeth and how important it is to brush their teeth properly twice a day.

I personally believe that, as dental hygienists, we should not just focus on stopping any existing diseases from progressing; but rather, we should focus on preventing them before they start.

Giving and receiving “One Love” in Jamaica

-Ashley Warshaw, SPC Student, Jamaica Program, October 2018

After being accepted into the St. Petersburg College dental hygiene program, I knew that the study abroad program in Jamaica would be the pinnacle of my studies and good experience for my future career in dentistry.

This opportunity would allow me to obtain an exceptional educational experience, while also having the opportunity to help a community receive amazing dental care.

During the ten days in Jamaica, we were seeing 6-10 patients a day, working 8-9 hours per day; however, there was a feeling I couldn’t describe. The clinical experience gained was more than I could imagine and the cultural dynamic in Jamaica is truly that of “one love”.

The people and patients I met touched my heart in ways I will never forget. I want to encourage every dental hygiene student at SPC to participate in this study abroad opportunity.

And finally, to everyone who made this trip possible, thank you. You really made a difference in many amazing lives! I feel extremely grateful and honored to have been given the opportunity to pursue this unforgettable study abroad program, all while representing St. Petersburg College of dental hygiene.

“I can’t wait to go on another trip like this one.”

-Megan McBride, SPC Student, Jamaica Dental Program, October 2018

From the moment that I was accepted to the study abroad program for dental hygiene, I was so excited. This is not a trip that you can even explain in words. I cannot even describe the joy we saw in people just by giving them a new toothbrush. At the same time, there are no words to describe the happiness the Jamaican people brought to my heart with their kind and loving souls.

It was not easy by any means. We were there to help, and if that meant to be exposed out in the heat for hours, then that’s what we were going to do. Despite this, I can honestly say it was the most amazing thing I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

Overall, this was such an amazing opportunity and I am beyond thankful that I was chosen to go on this trip. This has made me a better student, a better clinician, and just a better human being overall. I can’t wait to go on another trip like this one.
