Even though I traveled to Europe many times before, somehow it always remained mysterious and unknown continent that needed to be rediscovered, at least in my mind. Before the beginning of SPC Study Abroad Spain 2017 program this June I was not sure what expect or how to prepare for it. I didn’t even know anyone from my group. It was a little frustrating and frightening, but I also realized the necessity to step out of my comfort zone and immerse myself into the astonishing realm of culture, adventure and language learning.

After long months of eager anticipation we made our way to Spain. Finalmente! We settled in Salamanca which is a small town with rich history that can be traced all the way back to the Roman Empire. Our town is old, especially if measured by the US standards, but has a youthful and vibrant heart for life that can be felt in the streets, walls and, perhaps, its atmosphere. I personally like wandering through the streets, discovering something unexpected and outside the typical tourist routes. Unconventional path often proves to be the best.

One day, we cruised through “El barrio del Oeste” – the art district. District’s seemingly dull and grim streets located just outside beautiful downtown suddenly became lively and vivid through many different shapes and colors on its buildings. Random walls, garage doors and street corners were transformed into small masterpieces of street art. Someone’s garage door became artist’s playground of expression. Some walls had political satire or inspirational quotes. Finally, some graffiti’s were merely visually appealing to look at. It reminded me to always look for joy in details and simple moments of life.

My experience in Salamanca taught me that happiness and positive vibes were always right there, it just needed to be found, recognized and appreciated. This newly (re)discovered knowledge is what I shall take with me from Spain back home. Thank you SPC and my wonderful group as well as people of Spain for providing a lifetime experience this summer.
