Up and Down a Mountain to a Waterfall by Cora Jones

waterfallToday we took a hike to a waterfall.

It started with a 20 minute bus ride that stopped at a
dirt road to steep for our bus to even drive up. This is where we started our hike, then walked through a cow pasture on the side of a mountain. We then proceeded down the mountain (which was covered in wet clay).

Eventually we reached the part of the trail through a forest where there were walking sticks waiting for us. I’m glad I grabbed one because the trail got a little more difficult and the sticks helped us keep our balance on the trails.

After about 45 minutes of walking we reached the bottom where there was a beautiful waterfall. It felt great to go swimming here after our strenuous hike. After spending about an hour here we hiked back out (which was strenuous but we all made it)!!! We took a victory photo to commemorate our success!

Nets and Turtles and Snorkels, Oh My! by Cora Jones

Today 10176146_268898463293388_4117584857106116523_nwas our first full day here in Costa Rica and we got to take the boat out for our first day of catching sea turtles. We threw out large nets into the bay then jumped into the water with snorkels to make sure the nets weren’t tangled and in proper position. We ended up catching 4 turtles!

We took measurements, tissue samples, and tagged them all. Then we released them back into the water. It was an awesome experience!! None of the turtles today needed to be brought back to the hospital.

It was however still an eventful day and after eating my authentic Costa Rican dinner I was ready for bed early!

Back home! by Cora Jones

Well we are finally back home from our trip to Denmark.  Although I am glad to be home, I will miss all of the great people we met. We were met with great hospitality from multiple students in the Denmark vet tech program.  They showed us Danish culture, took us to national monuments, and let us experience what its like to work as a vet tech in a different part of the world.  We visited multiple clinics, the vet tech school, the vet school, zoos, and farms.  This trip was a great experience and one I will never forget.   Thank you SPC for giving me this opportunity to experience my educational and professional career across the globe.

School Visit by Cora Jones

So we are now in a new town staying with a different Danish student. She picked us up yesterday from the Veterinary Technician school in Kolding, where we had a tour of the school and a BBQ. It was really cool to see the similarities and differences between St Petersburg College Vet Tech program and the school here in Denmark. They also have animals that belong to the school and live on campus like our school however they have less cats, only beagles for dogs, their own herd of dairy cattle, horses, and a few rooms full of laboratory animals (rats, mice, rabbits and two pigs). The school also houses some zoo animals but they are generally used for the zoo keeper program that the school also offers. It was also a great opportunity to meet more of the Danish students and talked about the types of classes they take and assignments they have. I think this trip was a great opportunity to learn about my career choice as a vet tech and how that job is performed in other countries.

Having a good time in Denmark! by Cora Jones

Hello! We are having a great time in Denmark. Yesterday we went to visit a couple different castles, including the one that the current royal family lives in. While watching the guards change shifts we missed the prince actually jog behind us and walk into the castle. That evening for dinner one of our host students family made us a traditional Christmas dinner! It tasted great! After dinner we went to a mid summer nights eve festival in town. We walked to a local park and sat by a lake to watch a large bonfire with a fake witch in the middle that was set on fire. The burning witch was followed by fireworks. Needless to say our day was filled with Danish  culture.

Denmark trip! by Cora Jones

Hello everyone!

Today we visited the Veterinary School in Denmark.  We were given a tour by students of the Veterinary Technician school because this is the practice they are working at during their program.  We also met the tech students from Minnesota that are shadowing the Danish students.  It was nice to compare the school programs and talk about how they differ.  The vet school itself was full of very cool high tech machines such as physical therapy water treadmills, digital radiology, MRI, CT scan and large blood diagnostic machines.  Tomorrow we will be visiting a small animal hospital with our Danish exchange student, as well as an animal shelter. I am excited to see the shelter because that is the type of practice I work at.
