When we left the school in Kolding we headed to Arhus. Our host had three lovely boxers. We were surprised they are not on the restricted breed list in Denmark seeing as many muscle dogs are. We went to her sister’s graduation/birthday party which was mostly family, and some friends. Graduations are very important in Denmark, and are highly celebrated. The graduate receives a hat with a colored stripe on it that matches their schooling, they will wear this hat whenever they chose for the average of one month. We went to a clinic in Fredericia where we saw a 10 month old cat who had been hit by a car, a 5 year old bulldog that was being neutered, and a dog that was injected with a small plastic chip with a slow release medication in it, to stop the reproductive hormones of the animal, so that the owner can see the temperament change in the animal for 6 months and then make the decision of whether or not they want to sterilize the animal. We also saw an ear hematoma that was drained and then had a sponge stitched to it to heal, we had never seen such a thing, although we heard that they do that in American clinics as well. We also saw an abstract art show on the beach in Arhus, and had a very interesting train ride back to Copenhagen. We will be departing soon. It has been a great trip!

Farvel Danmark! by Casey Kiernan
Hallo!
Today we went to Odense Dyrehospital and we were very impressed with the size, efficiency, and cleanliness of the clinic. They board katte, but not hunde. They have many specialists including an oncologist, dermatologist, physical therapist, periodontist, orthopedic surgeon and internal medicine. I’m very impressed with the clinics here and how many physical therapy/rehabilitation rooms we have seen. I think physical therapy is important in helping to guarantee the results of a major surgery or operation.
We saw a foreign body operation, it was the third time this dog had this operation, the first time was a banana in pajamas toy, the next time was a Kong toy, and this time was an uncooked potato. We watched a liver biopsy of a dog with liver cancer, we got to see the cancer on the ultrasound monitor, it was a neat experience but very sad.
After the clinic we drove down to another clinic of the same name, this clinic was located in a shopping mall and was much smaller but still a very nice clinic, with nice equipment and organization. There was a pet store across the parking lot, they do not sell dogs or cats in the pet stores just rodents and fish.
After the clinics we went to Svenborg to see castles and a church. There is a lot of history here. We went in the maze in front of the castle and through the cemetery next to the church. They were just strålende places, with skøn views.
We visited the hus where Hans Christian Andersen was født, there were children putting on a play.

Hej allesammen,
Our day started with a lovely Danish breakfast! We went for a stroll, then we visited the zoologisk have. We saw many animals up close and personal. The zoo was not like many zoos any of us had visited before, the animals had very natural habitats, a lot of space to fit them and their lifestyles, and there were many opportunities to be very close to the animals, including underground viewing areas where a polarbear swam just a few feet above our heads, we were able to pet camels, we were not far at all from the meerkats, and in the jungle area the birds were flying right over our heads. We actually witnessed the meerkats being fed, we were shocked that they would feed carcusses to animals in the view of the visitors which included small children. I don’t think we would ever do that in the United States. Later we discussed behavior, and training with our host. She informed us that it is a requirement in their education to take multiple classes on behaviors of animals and training, they really get to know each breed and really try to teach others to prevent poor treatment of animals. This topic came up when we realized how well behaved animals are here, and that most of the dogs we have seen stay with their owners, even when off of a leash. She also informed us that Denmark thinks very badly about Cesar Milan and his training tactics that his seminar in Denmark was cancelled and they will actually never allow him to do a seminar here. We found that very interesting.
Farvel, Ha’ det godt.
